Is there something like an IRC channel for this or anything set up by a fan or something?

To my knowledge, no.

I've thought about integrating a chatroom here, but there never really seemed to be much interest in it.

The Search function should find an IRC chat room.    But from my last test (many cycles ago) it is pretty much inactive.    Being on some small no-name server doesn't help the matter.   

If there is general interest, I would set up a room on Quakenet or Rizon.

I have an IRC room on irc.synirc.net for my LP on somethingawful.  There's usually a decent amount idling there, several of whom might be able to answer your questions.  #ColdestWar.

Also if you haven't looked at Bgreman's LP, you totally should do yourself a favor and do so, I've never seen so much effort put so consistently into any community game. Not simply Aurora.
