Title: Question on refit
Post by: Saibot on July 08, 2013, 09:14:43 AM
At what refit cost would you say it's not worth it? Thus far I've been refitting all my combat ships just to keep their TF training and crew grade, just curious when that would stop being a good idea.

When the refit costs more than a new one.

When refitting make sure you refit as few modules as possible at the same time. It is generally better to refit ships several times one component at a time. The greater the change the higher the cost. The engines should most probably be the most expensive and
costly to refit in a ship.

Cost is measured in BP?

The drawback to this approach is you can have several generations of the same ship in service. The drawback to the other method is increased refit costs.

I don't recall if refits will use pre-fabbed components or not. But if they do, that can reduce your refit costs a lot also.

Ok, is there a certain point where shipyards won't do the refit at all? Trying to upgrade my flagship with all the new tech I researched, essentially new everything except missile systems and sensors, weight is within 100 tons, cost is 1772.75(still lower than cost of new ship of upgraded class), but the only refit option I'm given is my troop transport class.

Refits can use pre-fabbed components. This can save a lot of time especially if you are refitting engines.

Have you retooled the shipyard to the new shiptype, that might be your problem.

Yeah, that's what it was. Previous refits had been close enough that I could build either one from a facility tuned to the other, these were too drastic for that though.

I usually let refits cost more as long as it's less then the extra training time opportunity cost + fuel cost (assuming the ship your refitting has 100% crew training).

It depends.  Do I want to bring ships up to a standard speed?  Is it faster to refit than build new?  I can take the older ships and use them for other duties?

Cost is just one factor in the decision making process.

Reading the old threads it says PDC refit doesn't work, is that still the case?

Since it was not listed a fixed for v6 or later and is listed as an issue for v5.6 my presumption is that it is still an issue.  I haven't tried to use it for several versions, much less lately, so I don't have direct confirmation one way or the other.

I can confirm that as of 6.1 PDC refit does not work.  The construction effort and minerals are expended but the refit does not take effect.

I currently then use SM mode to delete the old and replace it with a new one.
