So now that I've decided to actually post on these forums, I'm starting a new game and asking for advice. Here are the two starting ships I designed. I cheated a bit and gave myself all techs costing four thousand or less. XD. So here they are, what do you think?

Obviously these two ship types are to be used in tandem, I'm thinking maybe two of each, or three each, or two beam and four missile, not sure yet. Any ideas? Are these worth using?

Your ships are kinda slow for NPE and the maint life is on the low side but that is ok. The AMM sensor is clearly inadequate, 2 HS just does not cut it, and the passive sensors don't add too much if you're looking for something to junk. pay attention to range vs size 6 missiles, that is your intercept envelop, and your ships as is can't spot incoming missiles until they are 280K away from you, not 2.6M.

Your fuel capacity doesn't match your deployment time either.

The ships are kinda slowish (not being overly familiar with the game I'm not sure how fast those engines should be) because they don't use any speed boosts in the interest of fuel efficiency. As for the fuel capacity, I measure how far they can travel, not how long they can last. The distance from the sun to Pluto is about six billion kilometers so I figure these ships have enough fuel for a trip to the edge of the solar system and back, about as far as I realistically expect to deploy them. I also plan of having tankers and colliers with them on longer range deployments if needed, but hopefully I'll have better tech by then. As for the sensors, I completely screwed that up, I thought it said two point six million for size six missiles and smaller, it's actually for objects fifty tons and larger. D'oh. I'll have to fix that. I like keeping the EM and thermal sensors on as I don't like the idea of leaving my ships completely blind so I'll stick a size one sensor of each type on all of them for RP reasons. I also just noticed that my missiles seriously out range my fire controls. Another adjustment I'll need to make.

Overall engine percentage on the ship. 2k km/s can be achieved with NTE drives and something like 40% engines. You should be aware that there will be faster ships out there.

For your beam ship I noticed that your 15cm lasers far outrange the beam fire control. You might want to change them to 10cm which will still max your current fire control range out, and give you twice the rate of fire. Total damage per weapon will stay pretty much the same, but the total space needed will go down slightly. (4 hs for the 15cm vs 3 hs for the 10cm, but twice as much power required for the higher rate of fire.) Overall this doesn't sound like a good switch until you look at your anti-missile capability. Your overall point defense will go up.

While the improved MFC "Cable" on the Ark Royal II will help, the "watchdog" is still far too small. again, it determines when your ships spot, and thus fire at incoming missiles, and right now you're still limited to 280K km.
