So, I've been wondering what the TL2, TL32, etc... of ruins actually means for what you can find from them?
-
every tech in aurora has levels, as you may have seen, for example
- L1: 10 cm laser aperture
- L2: 12 cm laser aperture
- L3: 15 cm laser aperture
or
- L1: nuclear pulse engines
- L2: nuclear thermal engines
- L3: ion engines
...ect.
A ruin of tech level 2 will have a chance of revealing to you 2nd tier techs, for example 12cm lasers or nuclear thermal engines
a ruin of tech level 3 will have a chance of reavling to you 3rd tier techs, for example 15cm lasers or ion engines.
I find there's a tendency to overestimate my tech levels, so when I find a TL4 ruin I'm initially like "oh MAN! Come on! I already have engines and sensors and lasers twice that good!"
...but I usually don't have missile agility that good and plasma carronades that good and meson cannons that good ect.

Ohh, that makes perfect sense, Thank you!
-
Also, from my experience it's not a hard cap, as I've gotten tech a level or two higher than the ruin it came from.
-
It also influences the level of the components that are sometimes dug out, but who uses those other than for scrapping? Only one time I found 20+ magneto-plasma drives when I still had ion, so that could have been an option.
-
It only influences the level of components, not tech that engineers get with buildings.
I once found technology specifications for Thermal Sensor Sensitivity 40 and Thermal Sensor Sensitivity 50 on TL1 world. All ship components, on the other hand, had exact tech level of 1.

I think the ridiculously high stuff coming out of low TL ruins is a bug of some sort, I once had a TL1 ruin that insisted on giving me Mining upgrades, by the time I had recovered everything, I had Mining 60 or something.

I believe that ruins give technology that is 1 level above technology you currently have.
