Title: getting aurora to work
Post by: mithril on February 02, 2008, 10:04:21 PM
i've installed the game, and i keep getting error messages. here is a list of the ones so far..

when i clicked on "system information" i recieved the following:
Error 713 was generated by Aurora
Class not registered
You need the following file to be installed on your machine. MSSTDFMT.DLL

when i chose a hull type in ship design it give me messages:
"invalid property array index"

and then

"the microsoft jet database engine cannot find query ' and component ID IN (select SDcomponentID from ShipDesignComponents where type allowed = 2)' make sure the name is spelled correctly"

before going to
"Object variable or With block variable not set"

then i get a chance to continue. if i pick no, the selection is cancelled. if i choose yes, i get a constant cycle of the above messages which i have to use the windows task manager to shut down the program to escape.

for referance, i'm using Windows Vista, on a Acer laptop with AMD Turion dual core processor, (1.9ghz).

This is a set of problems I haven't seen before so it would suggest there is a problem with the installation. Firstly, could you open the About window on the Help menu and check the version. Secondly, did you follow all the various installation steps, installing 0.1, then patching to 1.2 and then patching to 2.5? I know that's not ideal and I really should create an up to date full install for v2.6

The DLL not registered seems to pop up occasionally for VB programs in general. There is an application called regsvr32 in the windows\system folder. This registers ocx, dll and other library type files. Use a DOS command line or the Run option under start menu.
Type: regsvr32 MSSTDFMT.DLL

Its possible that might fix the other problems if the install was fine.

i tried reinstalling, and i tried the regsvr32, no change.

so i did a file search to see if i even had the file. no result. a check of microsoft.com (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vbrun/ms788708.aspx) turns up that MSSTDFMT.DLL is not a runtime file shipped with vista.

so it looks like this is a OS problem.

i've had them before. i lost the capacity to run Starfleet Command 1 years back when Windows switched over to ME from 95/2000.

Can you add MSSTDFMT.DLL to make it work? I know other people are using Aurora on Vista so I wonder if they ran into the same issue. Anyone reading who encountered this before and fixed it?

I emailed the DLL to mithril. Let's see if that works.

Thanks. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

thanks.

it solved the system information problem, but i'm still getting the same messages for the ship design section. i'll check microsoft.com to see if the "Microsoft Jet Database" program needs updates or something.

edit:
these are the error message explanations i can find on the site..
Invalid Property array index    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa277298(VS.60 (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa277298(VS.60)).aspx
Object variable or With block variable not set (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316478)

ok. after hooking up to a bigger monitor, it turns out the ship design issue was because i couldn't access the lower part of the screen. i was trying to make new ships without creating a new class first. oops.    no wonder the database was yelling at me.

everything seems to be working fine, except i keep getting "error6 Overflow" after a while, which after closing several instances at once the program shuts down. only occurs when i try to open anything related to the Economics window.

i've found the only way to resolve this so far is to delete that game, which is annoying. especially since i barely get started before it crops up.

I think this is another one where you will need to send me the database.

I am having problems with the screen sizing correctly. I am running at 1280x1024 resolution under Vista. I am losing part of the right-hand side and lower right-corner on some screens (F9 leaps to mind). Is there something obvious I am overlooking in trying to correct this?

Try hiding your task bar. that might allow the necessary real estate to be available.

Didn't work, unfortunately--still missing on both right side and bottom.

Definitely something strange going here. the F9 window fits very comfortably on my second monitor (1280x1024) with about an inch gap between the window and the right edge and bottom of the screen. I am running XP though? Does Vista have something else on the screen compared to XP?

Not with the task bar hidden It is very odd. I haven't discounted my machine lieing to me  :?

This is a screenshot of my second monitor running 1280x1024 with the F9 window in view. How do the proportions compare to your machine?

This is what I see. It makes me think my monitor isn't at the correct resolution, despite it saying it is in two different places.

It does look like you are in 1024x768. Unfortunately I haven't used Vista so I don't know if there is anything weird about resolutions. Is there anyone reading this who is using Aurora with Vista at 1280 resolution?

Hi.  Was pointed here by the SCN forum and have installed 2.5 acording to all the instructions and now I'm getting the same error as the original poster of this thread.

when i clicked on "system information" i recieved the following:
Error 713 was generated by Aurora
Class not registered
You need the following file to be installed on your machine. MSSTDFMT.DLL

So, I've looked and failed on finding this file, any pointers on where to look?

The game needs at least 1280 x 1024 resolution, otherwise, as you observed, you can?t see the buttons down there.
I had it running on my similar laptop by using some kind of virtual monitor. I was just playing around in the systems menue, and managed to set the thing to a higher resolution than the screen was able to display.
Everytime the mousepointer went over the lower/upper edge, the picture on the screen would  "scroll" up or down, to follow the pointer.

I?m not sure you can understand what I am trying to say, as I am having a hard time to understand it myself :)

As far as I remember I did it by right clicking on a free spot on the screen -->  Settings (or something along that line, as I have a german Windows) --> Settings

There I can set up a Multi-Monitor-System. By fooling around with those settings I managed the trick. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable with PCs (I just hit keys and press buttons and pray the bloody thing does as I want it to) can help and explain it better.

I haven't been able to find much on something like that either.

I tried rotating my screen and that kinda worked, except up left and down being right and such isn't terribly natural.

If someone else knows something about this or another fix, I'd be terribly happy.

There was a link posted to a "screen expander" utility. Allows you to scroll off the edges of your monitor. I've used it on my laptop to run Aurora. I know the link is around here somewhere. If I find it, I'll repost it.
