Of course there would need to be a non-trivial chance of the AI going rouge (its pretty much the most enduring meme in the whole of sf).  Maybe every 30 days a % chance of the ship becoming an NPR, same behavior code as the spoilers? The chance could depend on tech level, and how much of the crew is replaced.  So you could, say, safely replace 25% of the crew, replace 50% at a small risk but have a high chance of a fully automated ship turning against you.
Except for something like ship navigation you dont need a conscious AI.  Thats overkill.  And a non conscious AI is no different than AI in modern gaming (cant betray unless told to)

Its the only clean installer.  Vanilla install is a hackjob of manually piecing together all the parts to get up to date.  I also like the built in music.  I dont like losing access to my desktop. Many other people have complained about losing access to their desktop too. Yes I personally can launch the aurora.exe without the wrapper and play fine but many people cant.

Changes which have no ill effects.  On the other hand the image itself breaks your desktop making it inaccessible.

Honest question:  why does the image even exist?  What was the intended goal in disabling the users desktop while playing?

The next release is gonna be C# Aurora which will be a year away. You can open up taskmanager and kill the wrapper after launching aurora so the background image obviously isnt essential to anything happening. There really isnt any excuse why its not configurable.

That background picture is unacceptable. There have been many many complaints about it. Everytime I run the game I have to open up the taskmanager and crash the thing just to get my desktop back. Game runs fine after crashing the image so why isnt it configurable since its obviously not essential?

Aurora is written in VB6 which was released roughly 1996.  Its not multi core aware.

Did you unzip the zip files that were in the Full Install download?
If only we had a wiki with clearly written step by step instructions for times like this ...  ...  ...

Totally unrelated.  When is the wiki coming back online?

Its not game balancing though. I would be interested in any explanation that could detail why its a balance and not just a random hindrance.

What is even the point in checking ship types for jumping?  Sorry but once a hole is punched in space that hole is a generic spatial distortion while it lasts and its not gonna care about whether a ship is military or commercial passing through.  This is really a pointless limitation that adds nothing to gameplay, reason or fun.   And actively detracts from all 3.

AcidWeb is the person doing this package and has stated in reddit threads that he has no intention of removing the fullscreen image from his wrapper launcher.

Its still a bug.   The display value for the fleet can just show a max value msg when it isnt capable of calculating the real total.   Other games do this.   Hell some telnet MUD games I used to code on (anyone remember ROM and CIRCLE ?) had code in them along the lines of

Code: [Select]
if( max_int - cur_total > value_to_add ) {  /* oops */ }
prevents crashes at least

people normally get errors like that when they try to run an installer without unzipping it first.   Installers need access to the other files inside the zip

Sounds like you need to run infinite screen with admin privileges, that should fix it.
UAC is disabled so that shouldnt be an issue.  Will try it when I get a chance but thankfully for now I was given a friends damaged laptop and fixed it up.  Now got a screen that supports the reduced window height mode (but still not full size).   I can play properly at least.

When research finishes and a diff research is queued to immediately start can we please not have auto turn disable?   Autoturn should only disable for things that require intervention.    When we've set up a queue we dont want interrupted.

In general EVERYTHING that has an interrupt should allow the player to disable that interrupt.   We did already intentionally check 'autoturn' after all.

Scrollable views would work perfectly.    I dont care if i have to scroll.    Right now anything off screen is just outright inaccessible though.    And strangely enough the "Infinite Screen" utility seems to work on everything EXCEPT Aurora.    Aurora windows just stand still while everything else shifts.

While not supporting such low resolution is an annoyance the game _IS_ outstanding in all other regards.   I dont want to sound too negative =-)
