Hello all, been a long time since I posted in here. I've always wanted to work on a Honorverse-inspired setting, and since C# came out this has been much easier. All ships are designed for a setting with the following constraints:
  • There are no maintainance requirements (in my previous experience, running this option as active when trying for such large designs results in declining returns very quickly, and in the books such errors are few and far between)
  • All ships must be capable of interstellar travel (jump engines for all, and I will not be building or researching the jump-gate technologies)
  • I will attempt to follow the design sense of the Honorverse setting as much as possible (lasers and missiles as offensive tools, CIWS to represent point defence, and AMM's as counter-missiles) - where other technologies come into play, I will try to adapt them to their closest cousin in-universe (carronades to energy torpedos, microwave to grav-lance etc)
  • For ease of construction and repair, components such as fire controls and jump engines will be built to allow for future-proofing, and shared where possible across classes.

The Madrigal-class Destroyer represents the common fighting vessel of the Solarian League Navy. Equipped with six twenty-cm lasers port and starboard for their energy armament, albeit capped to just under three-hundred and eighty-five thousand kilometres due to sensor limitations, the Madrigal's are also equipped with a battery of eight D10 missile silos firing the current generation Kukri nuclear missile, also arranged port and starboard, consistent with standard SLN armament doctrine. The design is intended to act as the first line of the League's defence, capable of operating for just under a year without needing to refuel, though SLN habit is to refuel field operations when down to forty-percent reserve bunkerage. The class is equipped with a defensive suite also consistent with SLN doctrine. Twelve Mark 37 countermissile tubes function as the first line of defence for the ship, with a bank of six Shuriken-pattern decoys fitted, as well as two Theta S40-grade sidewall generators and the latest jammer technologies.

Built to achieve relative compatibility with the Madrigal's, the Virtuous-class is built using many identical components, with key exceptions being the larger amount of mass used for additional decoy launchers, upscaled twenty-five centimetre lasers, the larger Theta S73-grade sidewall generators, and room to carry two full SLN boarding parties in battle armour along with hanger space for a Mk40 Pinnace to carry each party. As the class is not intended for independent ranging patrols, it only carries the same amount of bunkerage as SLN destroyers do, though it can serve admirably as a convoy escort.

As the heavy combatant of the current SLN, the Star Knight-class is built with a core of heavier weapons, in this case thirty-centimetre lasers and the large-bore D20 launchers firing the Pike ASM, offering a warhead twice as effective and with corresponding range increases as well. With an armour coverage twice as thick as a destroyer, and half again the thickness of a light cruiser, the Star Knight's sidewalls are built using the same larger installations of the preceding Virtuous-class.

Although so far I've not encountered any spoilers or NPR's in the two in-game years that have passed, I have constructed a second faction titled REDLAND to function as live fire training, using Steve's great template to copy these designs over. Currently I have tested the Madrigal against itself. In the most recent test, the SWS Wolsey fired 88x Kukri's at Target Hulk DD-01. DD-01 was set with all laser batteries to area defence, and for the CMM's to be fired on a 1-to-1 basis against incoming missiles. After successfully intercepting 36 of the Kukri's, with 4 more destroyed by laser, the 4 leakers took shield strength to zero and inflicted damage on the armour belt with no component damage. For the remaining half of incoming fire, the DD-01's CMM's were sent to be fired on a 2-to-1 basis. Combined with laser fire, only one missile inflicted further damage on the armour belt with no further effect.

Thank you! I had a lot of fun trying to design the ships, and I look forward to seeing how they do in my current game.

A quick diversion into newer designs of the SLN with two non-military designs, and some speculative plans for future expansion:

The Wayfarer-class form the backbone of the SLN's Exploration Command. Thus far, SCSS Wayfarer and her sister ship Explorer have charted four other star systems, the latest of which is currently being surveyed as part of future plans to expand the League's holdings. The Wayfarer-class, although not intended for any military action, are equipped with the same point defence systems and electronic warfare jammers as the SLN's military ships, rounded off with a single Theta S40-grade sidewall generator. An identical assortment of sensors to that of her military cousins is included, bolstered by two ELINT modules. The class also mounts twice the standard suite for enhanced geo- and grav-surveying.

The Homer-class is currently a castle in the sky thought exercise among the naval yards of the SLN. Built for swift fleet engagements, with an operation radius on par with heavy cruisers but swifter than even destroyers and light cruisers, the Homer is equipped with an identical missile armament to that of the smaller Star Knight-class heavy cruiser. In turn, it enhances the laser armament from thirty-centimetre weapons to forty-centimetres, and magazine space is increased to allow for six-hundred and twenty additional counter-missiles, and a further sixty-two shipkiller missiles. The class is also designed with the same marine transport capability as a light cruiser, envisaged for more effective use in the role of boarding or counter-boarding actions. As a squadron flagship, each ship is designed with twice the standard fixture of point defence batteries as well as flag-rank C&C's and accommodations.

Tinkering with the new(ish) EW options for missiles as I've never really used them before, I took a bit of inspiration from the RMN's own weapon systems. Thus far, none of these have been built or tested, but my understanding is that at present, a salvo of missiles from a destroyer would result in the following:
Code: [Select]
8 ASM's fired
2 decoys per ASM * 8 = 16 decoys
Total of 24 possible targets

If the Dazzler is introduced on a ratio of 1-to-3, this gives us:
Code: [Select]
6 ASM's fired
2 decoys per ASM * 6 = 12 decoys
2 EDM's fired
8 decoys per EDM * 2 = 16 decoys
Total of 46 possible targets (44 if EDM's are not counted directly)

On the other hand, a salvo from a heavy cruiser would be on the lines of:
Code: [Select]
16 ASM's fired
4 decoys per ASM * 16 = 64 decoys
Total of 80 possible targets

If the Starburst is introduced on a ratio of 1-to-3, this gives us:
Code: [Select]
12 ASM's fired
4 decoys per ASM * 12 = 48 decoys
4 EDM's fired
5 SSM per EDM * 4 = 20
2 decoys per SSM * 20 = 40 decoys
Total of 124 possible targets (100 if EDM's/SSM's are not counted directly)

If anyone seeing this knows otherwise or can chime in, that would be appreciated!

Re: Ships of the Solarian League in the Year 4000
« Reply #4 on: April 09, 2025, 11:41:31 AM »
"As we find ourselves with only a month and a half left before 4050AD is upon us, with the colonisations of Luna, Mars and its terraforming project, and even laying claim to the third world in the Ross-128 system, so too has the SLN advanced as society has. With the backdrop of the conflict against the Terminids of distant 119 Piscium and the incursions of the stealthships of the Intruders, the SLN was determined to reforge itself into a fleet with black-sky expeditionary capability. Not only did this mean rehauling existing designs with new technology, but it meant new auxiliary vessels were required for this grand change. Whether or not the SLN can break its formative mould of its earlier years remainds to be seen.

Jayne's Intelligence Review - The Solarian League Navy, A Century of History

The new Warhawk-class, as with its larger brethren, is an updated variant of the preceding Madrigal. Improvements in Warshawki drives have allowed the installation of a smaller drive that is as effective as its precedent, allowing for a minor reduction in tonnage. Together with the new inertial fusion drive, this allows the Warhawk to attain velocities of just under 700 km/s more than the Madrigals, and it is equipped with new Xi S50 sidewalls and uprated point defence systems courtesy of Laudergaugh Kinetics, as well as uprated sensor jamming technology. Improvements in sensor technology have led to the replacement of the active sensors and passive EM/thermo sensors with more sensitive equivalents, as well as long-ranged fire controls for the 20cm laser batteries. With improvements in engine tech, as well as missile guidance and warhead advancements, the Mark 3 ASM and Mark 7 CM have been replaced with the new Mark 5 and Mark 8 respectively, and magazine allocations made to reduce the number of CM's in favour of ensuring complete loads for the D10 launchers.

As with its destroyer sibling, the Sphynx-class has benefitted from the same upgrades in fire controls, passive defences, especially with the new Xi S92 sidewalls, missile loads, drive replacements, sensors and EW systems. The key differences with this new design are that speed parity with SLN destroyers is no more, due to the necessity of retaining a dual reactor layout to help feed the faster-charging twenty-five centimetre lasers. In addition, the Mk40 Pinnaces have been replaced with the faster Mk41 design. Although the option to fit an additional drive was considered, the already-increased speed as well as the greater fuel efficiency and reach offered by the new drives offset this favourably in the eyes of the Admiralty.

As with other designs updated in the current programme, the Admiral-class has benefitted from the same fleet-wide technological updates, including faster-charging thirty centimetre-lasers and the newer, stronger Xi grade sidewalls. Current plans by the Admiralty will see one of the class assigned to each of the League's worlds, with a further two intended for use leading smaller taskgroups into the Terminid front.

With the new improvements in drive technology, the Homer-class will be moving into production within the next few years, intended to produce two flagships initially, before moving onto a division once more worlds have been colonised in the drive to 119 Piscium. In addition to fast charging forty-centimetre lasers, the Homer has also swapped its S5 decoy launchers for the newer and more capable S10 variant. The battlecruiser is also planned currently to be the only ship in the SLN that will carry EDM's as a standard part of its arsenal.

"As part of the SLN's expansion programme, new naval auxiliaries, not seen since the heyday of wet-naval warfare, were designed and slowly introduced as part of this black-sky capability. Tankers, colliers, repair ships, tugs, minelayers. These and more were vital for the future operations of the Solarian Navy. As a result, we have updated this copy of Jayne's with the following naval prefixes for easier clarification:

SWS - Solarian Warship
SNA - Solarian Naval Auxiliary
SMSS - Solarian Merchant Starship
SCSS - Solarian Civil Starship

All of the below designs in this section use the prefix SNA, thanks to their inclusion of military technologies. As part of the drive towards establishing this expeditionary capability, it was envisaged that anywhere from four to six of the respective classes would be introduced, to allow their use with multiple foreign deployments and easy rotation in service. The exception to this was the New Liskeard-class, designed to lay mines where needed, and envisaged as only operating behind friendly lines, or under heavy military escort."
