Planetary numbers out of sequence?

Hi All,
After a series of restarts and misadventures I seem to have found a planet worth the colonizing.
It is Ross248a II, for some reason.  I don't see Ross248 I or III or any others.
Is this a bug of some kind, or just a harmless artifact of the way the game
generates star systems?
I'm looking forward to being able to colonize this place.

Hmmm. Ross I could be so close to the sun, you need to REALLY zoom in to see it. Conversely, Ross III could be VERY far out and you might need to zoom OUT to see it. I have quite a few systems like that.

Hi,
That's a valid point, except I'm not using the System Map.
The System Summary screen (f9) wouldn't be impacted by zoom level, would it?
When I've used it before all bodies were displayed, and I didn't need to do
anything fancy.
This doesn't seem to be the problem.

You're right. I just checked several of my systems and noticed the same thing. Looks like the system generation skipped a number in a few instances. Odd that.

Aurora assigns  planetary bands to each system. When a band is not used or is filled by an asteroid belt, the number is still used up

I'm not quite sure I follow that, but it sounds reasonable enough.
There are no other bodies in the system: just the one planet and the star.
I'm curious how typical this is.

I get his explanation. The planet, in your case, Ross II, occupies the place assigned to planet 2 in a system, therefore Ross II, even though the first planet position is empty. I think that is what he means.

What kind of star are you dealing with? With large stars Aurora might generate the first 'planetary band', but because its too close to a large star it might delete the planet afterwards and not correct the names of other planets. Just a theory.

The planetary numbers are based on orbital 'slots'. An asteroid belt takes up a number for example. Also some possible planets don't form due to being too close to the star or to a binary companion. It's probably something I need to address at some point but I just haven't got around to it yet.
