A Test of Wills: Discovery is Available as an E-Book!
« on: May 05, 2011, 05:48:49 PM »
This thread is to announce that my Roman Story, A Test of Wills: Discovery, the first book in the saga is now available in an E-Book format.  8)

As you all know, A Test of Wills began as a story using Aurora to game it out. Well, it has moved beyond that and has grown into a universe all of it's own. Once I get the printed proof I will approve it and then a printed version will be available.

Below are the e-book links:

Amazon US

Amazon UK

Amazon Germany

Printed Version:

Gunny Pubs Webshop

Below is an e-mail our very own Backstab sent me after he had finished his read of the copy I sent him.

I needed an opinion from someone who was not involved with the project, And he fit the bill.  8)

Quote
Ken,

I have finally finished reading your book ..... now for my thoughts.

I like to compare my Mil Sci-Fi writers to (In my opinion anyway) the best ..... John Ringo (1) and the worst Tom Kratman(10) ... where would I place you, most probably in 3rd-4th spot.  If Tom Kratman can sell his dribble, then you should be able to out sell that clown !

The Book itself flowed quite well and to me made sense but to someone unfamiliar with the BTS! universe, they may struggle to understand some of the terminology you use and how things got to where they are ..... my suggestion to fix that would be to include a timeline .... then problem solved !

One thing I do not fully understand is why in 2540 , the UST military is still using conventional 7.62/.50cal  when by that time, caseless ammo would have been perfected to a point where it would be reliable enough for combat conditions ?

Best part of the book .... the interrogation of the Spakona. I expected at one stage to see his head start turning 360o and green pea soup spewing from his mouth !.  And the Atheri ... what game are they playing , that's got me intrigued.

The Worst part of the book ... The end ! IMHO , it finished too suddenly.

Ranking:    9.5/10   A Hymn before battle / Gust Front / When the Devil Dances / Hells Fair
                8.5/10    Starship Troopers (The Book)
                7 / 10    Test of Wills
                6 / 10    Yellow Eyes
                6 / 10     Into the looking glass
                4 / 10     Watch on the Rhine
                2 / 10     Caliphate

Grats on your publishing.  I was wondering where the romans went.   Guess when I get some money will have to get the book although my kindle got stolen #$%^#@$.  (last time I read about the romans was  I remeber the space station / asteroids and then you took a break  :'(  I will say books based on Webers model of empires and battles will probally do well because overall I do not find books which cover fleet or squadrons battles very often.   And as with all authors here I enjoy your work.

Sorry about the disappearence of the Romans, but I wanted to take them professional.  ;D The printed version should be available in a few weeks. Snail mail is quite slow.  :P

Just finished reading this book on my iPhone Kindle app.  Loved it, I've read all the posts you've done here in Aurora and missed the Terrans and Romans.  My only suggestion is similar to the one by Backstab..some sort of timeline.  From reading your previous posts I had a basic grasp of what was happening, but there are several times I had to sit and think for a minute to figure out what you were referencing.  So someone new to your work might get lost with some of the obscure references.  Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see what happens next.

I am glad you enjoyed the book my friend. Since we do not have a huge marketing budget we are relying on word of mouth. So if you have any friends who may like the book, please let them know. And if you would like to leave a comment on the book's amazon page, that would be really appreciated.  ;D

I think you will like where book two is going to go.  8) I will provide a snippet from it tomorrow, to whet your appetite.  ;D

Here is the wee teaser from Test book two I promised yesterday.  8)

They had left the Spákona sitting in the interrogation room for the better part of an hour before entering. The man had merely sat there with the same irritating smirk of a smile on his face, at least until the door to his cell opened. Gina and Daniel came in while the guard escorting them then took up his position with the other guards outside.

Daniel sat down across from the Spákona while Gina took up a position in the corner. “What shall we talk about today?” Daniel began, with a smile on his face, “Nothing to suggest? Well, then let’s begin our chat where we left off, how does that sound?”

The Spákona remained silent with the smirk plastered across his face.

Daniel just returned his smile. “Last time we spoke you had some... unkind words about our allies, would you care to back that up with something concrete, like maybe, oh I don’t know, actual evidence?”

“No, not really. I think, actually, it’s about time for me to go.”

“No way are we letting you go back to your masters. Not in a million years,” Gina said hotly.

“And just how do you intend to stop me?” The Spákona’s smile was back.

“There’s this little thing called an inhibitor. You remember that, right?” Gina said sarcastically.

The Spákona’s smile nearly split his face at Gina’s confidence in her Roman gadget. “Gina, may I call you Gina?” He said with a smirk.

“No you may not,” Gina shot back.

“As I was saying, Gina, your Roman toy is interesting. It was a mild surprise to my employers in its ability to nullify some of a Spákona’s powers.” His face seemed to split wide open with his grin, “oops, did I let that cat out of the bag?”

With that the Spákona stood up and winked out of existence before winking back in, uncuffed, and unrestrained.

“Tsk, tsk, tsk. I told you once before, I was here for a reason and let you catch me.” He said his grin getting even wider, if that was possible.

“But credit must be given where credit is due. Those former thralls are creative. But, alas, as much as I have enjoyed our little chat I must be going. Toodles ladies and gents, be seein’ ya later.” The Spákona’s expression suddenly changed to horror. “No! It cannot be, not here, not now!”

Three humanoid figures in bronze colored powered armor suddenly appeared out of thin air, sporting odd looking rifles.
