Background

The End was chaos; despite the leaps and bounds that global technology humans had made by 2062, there just simply wasn't enough ships available to save all of humanity, or even a significant portion of it.  As national governments tried to stem the tide, privately-funded 'survival' companies began to work on their own plans to save as many people as they could.  Each plan was similar, but different: build and board a space vessel bound for wild, untamed lands in the only frontier known left to us.  Space.  It was one such company, the Alban Corporation, that brings us this story.  Led by Sir Douglas Fraser of Edinburgh, a great effort was made to assemble a small flotilla of ships and evacuate as many people as they possibly could.  Unlike some of the more ruthless corporations, who saw nothing but profit even in the darkest hours humanity had yet seen, Sir Fraser was a more long-term thinker.  He knew well that money wouldn't matter when the end truly came, and Earth was so overheated from its' own atmosphere that it couldn't support life at all.

The Alban Corporation, even with limited resources, took as many people as they could.  Those that could afford a fee paid it; the larger the fee, the greater the grant of land they would receive at the end of their journey.  These resources were used to expand the program further, building more ships to take more people.  On 5 September 2062 CE, Launch Day, twenty ships with 50,000 colonists each departed from Earth to never see it again.

The journey wasn't easy, however.  Ships got lost or damaged, or suffered catastrophic engineering failure.  In the Migration's 65-year sublight journey, half of the colony ships were completely lost, and things looked grim.  Until then-Captain William Fraser made a fantastic discovery.

It wasn't the first system that the refugees has found; there had been others much less suitable.  Systems filled with barren rocks, that had poisonous atmospheres (if they had one at all), and systems with just a lonely star, and no other bodies.  This new system, dubbed Cernunnos by the Captain and his senior officers, was promising.  Archaic probes showed a 10-system planet, with a massive habitable third planet.  This third planet, named Danu by the senior officers, showed signs of promise, despite it's mountainous shape.  Verdant trees grew across them, save for snow-capped peaks, with a near-perfect mix of nitrogen and oxygen atmosphere to be perfect for human life.  Orders were given, and the ten remaining colony ships landed on the surface.

The year now is 1100 PL (Post Landing. ) Following a vicious civil war, the royal house of Fraser still sits the throne in Sterling.  The previous king, King Brian IV, was assassinated and his 22-year-old son Alexander II now faces the daunting task of leading the 350 million Albans to a prosperous future. 

Author's Notes

This is going to be a slightly scuffed AAR.  I've always loved reading them on the forums, but I've never commented or posted anything here before.  This is my first AAR, and my first post.  Unfortunately, I don't have enough posts do add images and I didn't want to spam post to meet the requirement.  Also, I am not good or experienced with Aurora.  There's going to likely be a lot of bad takes, decision, and some very poorly optimized design.

Alban Armed Forces

Alban Defense Force

The Alban Defense Force (ADF) is the territorial defense branch of the Alban Armed Forces (AAF).  Initially founded to protect the fledgling colony from wildlife incursions, the force has grown, holding approximately 5,000 combat-ready personnel with a tooth-to-tail ratio of 1:8.  Actual ADF doctrine splits the ADF into two sub-branches: the ADF Ranger Corps, and the ADF Infantry Corps.

The mountains and forests that cover Danu’s surface force the ADF to operate with a light infantry focus.  Two companies of light, highly-trained rangers will skirmish the enemy line, constantly moving and keeping the enemy from being able to settle.  However, the ADF Rangers, while potent in their own right with their RA-5 laser rifles, aren’t capable of forcing a breakthrough in a fortified line on their own.  That’s when the Infantry Corps steps in to boot the door open.

Whereas the Rangers are focused on mechanized mobility, the Infantry are pure force.  Clad in full power-armor and carrying the more versatile (and powerful) RA-5B Lasrifle, the Infantry are the armored fist of the ADF. 

Royal Navy

Political drama haunts the Alban Royal Navy (ARN).  King Alexander’s predecessor insisted on expanding the navy; the old Laignech Fáelad-class cruisers were re-classed to light cruisers.  Original naval doctrine focused on heavy laser batteries, but the cruisers were retrofitted, exchanging laser cannons and a power plant for two bow-mounted torpedo tubes

King Brian IV, however, wasn’t satisfied.  He felt that Cernunnos was a rarity, a shining jewel in the black, and needed a matching first line of defense.  After a bitter argument with his Prime Minister and with Parliament, Brian IV approved the creation of two new ship classes.  The first was the Danu-class heavy cruiser, which took a weakened laser cannon broadside in exchange for a larger compliment of Sgian Dubh missiles, and the more powerful Claymore shipkillers.

Second was a more formidable beast still.  Named for his great-great grandfather, the Hound of Ulster, the King Brian II-class battlecruiser truly dripped with all the weaponry that the Alban shipyards could bring to bear.

King Alexander, a little like his father, looks more outward towards the solar system than some of his more liberal political rivals.  Whereas a not-insignificant portion of Parliament wants to focus on colonizing more and more of Danu, the king sees opportunity in the planets in his system.  The discovery of Danu led to the discovery of Trans-Newtonian elements, and he knows more secrets await out there.  For this purpose, he has seen fit to expend enormous political capital to approve another ship: the Discovery-class exploration ship.

The ribbon cutting for the ship is set to take place on 1 January 1100 AL.  Alexander hopes that the discoveries she makes will usher in a new era of prosperity, and ease the suffering economy.
