Refueling Ships
« on: September 14, 2014, 11:26:36 AM »
OK lets say a ship has run out of fuel due to the inept Fleet HQ how does one go about refueling it? :)

Primary
A) send a tanker to refuel the stranded ship

Secondary
B) send another ship to join the task group & Equalize fuel tanks

you can also set conditional orders for your ships so they refuel when they are getting low on fuel
In my humble opinion anything that could be considered a balance issue is a moot point unless the AI utilize it against you because otherwise it's an exploit you willing choose to use to game the system.

My ships don't usually care about cond refuelling orders. Especially those survey ships :(

The problem is that the ship only checks fuel status when going from Order A to Order B, not in the middle of performing Order A.

So, for example, your survey ships has 100% fuel at Earth. She then checks that the nearest body in need of survey is Pluto. Off she goes. The conditional logic doesn't check whether the ship has enough fuel to even reach Pluto. This is why I always use the "Survey next body" instead of the "survey next 5 bodies", as the former at least allows the conditional logic to check fuel status more often.

Always make sure that your survey ships have enough fuel to go at least over 10 billion kilometres, preferably 20 billion.

I'm not sure that's correct. From my observation the ships are perfectly capable of turning about in the middle of performing an order. From what I've seen the checks are being performed each increment, so if you're using 30 day ones, you may indeed go too far and run out of fuel (for example, before the increment you had 51% of fuel, after it you had 41%). It's still not perfect but not as bad as the situation you described.

Please note that those are my observations only; they may be wrong.

Even after the increment has processed, if the ship has the conditionals set properly then at 41% the ship should head for the nearest fuel depot.

Oh well I now usually just create huge survey ships with both survey tools and so much fuel that they could probably survey huge trinary systems if I had enough time.

Sorry, seems like I haven't properly conveyed what I meant. Yes, I agree, the ship will head to the fuel depot after the increment if she has proper conditions (refuel if fuel is below 50%). My point was merely that due to how the conditions are applied the ship may still run out of fuel if the increment is long enough.

Now that I think about it it may be a good idea to add a new condition (fuel below 60% or even 70%) just to be on the safe side in such situations.

OK. . .  follow up question from a rank newbie

Maru 1 has run out of fuel completely
Maru 3 has a full tank.
Each are in their own separate task groups.

How do I get Maru 3 to rendezvous with Maru 1 to refuel it?

Tell Maru 3 to wither join or absorb Maru 1 in the TG window (you have to check the show  task group box  to select other task groups). There is a button called equalize fuel, click it, then detach. Or, move Maru 3 to the same location, and under the Ships window, misc tab, you can manually transfer fuel.

Thanks!  The thing that I was missing was ticking the show task group box.   (Of course, now that I know, it seems obvious.  But that's always the way. )
