Buoy delivery?

I am a little confused, because I launched a missile intended to deliver a buoy at a jump point but I get a message:
   6x Size 4.73 buoy delivery has no target and no onboard sensors and will therefore self-destruct.

Do I need to put sensors on these delivery systems for them to work?
More guns = more funs

Was the buoy a second stage and was it delivered before the first stage self-destructed?

Yes the buoy was a second stage and no it was not delivered before the self-destruction. I have the separation range at 150k so I thought the buoy would be released at 150k and then sit there.

I should also mention I do not have the patch installed.

What version are you playing? The way bouys work was altered when 6 changed engine mechanics. I can't specifically remember how they operated in v5, but I think longevity was based on reactor strength.
