Cry Havoc

Starting in 2400 with 1 billion starting population, Improved Nuclear Pulse technology, and a 1.5 billion population NPR on Earth.

Prelude

The Northern Commonwealth

By 2400, the turbulent 21st and 22nd centuries seemed like ancient history. The discovery of TransNewtonian physics brought unprecedented technological progress and the demons of climate change, poverty, and war were banished. Earth's population had stabilized at around 2.5 billion, most living in the glittering arcologies and park-like suburbs of the two main political blocs: The Northern Commonwealth (popularly known as NorCom) and the TransPacific Alliance.

The Northern Commonwealth, with a population of a billion, dominated the Atlantic Ocean. Its nominally democratic government had its capital on the artificial island of Atlantis, and was led by a consul. Parlimins for the upper house of the Commonwealth Parliament were elected, while those for the lower house were selected by computerized sortition based on weighted algorithms.

The defense forces of NorCom were unified under Peacekeeper Command. The six Peacekeeper Brigades were little more than military police armed with light weapons and a few armored vehicles, mainly tasked with intervention in the world's few remaining trouble spots.

The space forces of the Peacekeeper Fleet were also relatively small, although they were believed to have a technological advantage over their TPA counterparts in most areas. In 2400 Tactical Command possessed four Minotaur-class cruisers, eight Achilles-class missile destroyers, eight Antelope-class escorts, two Raven-class watchships, and four Myrmidon weapons platforms.

Spacelift Command relied on ten Titan-class freighters, two Cyclops-class brigade transports, and the five Ad Astra-class colony ships.

The TransPacific Alliance

Very little was known to NorCom about the interior workings of the secretive TransPacific Alliance, which had long since closed its borders to concentrate on developing a form of "Socialism with TransNewtonian Characteristics."

The TPA was believed to have a population of approximately 1.5 billion, and its space forces dwarfed those of NorCom. Its largest warships massed over 27,000 tons, with the remainder consisting of a bewildering array of types built in large numbers. There was also considerable civilian shipping.

Nothing at all was known about TPA ground forces.

For all the menace implied by hundreds of thousands of tons of duranium, the TPA fleet showed no aggressive action, and a quiet stalemate prevailed in orbit. NorCom Fleet Command had little to do but monitor the strange EM fluctuations of TPA vessels.

In January of 2400, however, everything would change as deep muon scanning revealed structures of unmistakably artificial origin buried beneath the Lunar regolith.

I've removed the last two posts. I'll be starting over from the beginning since nothing really happened in 20 years and I'd like to do some things like ground forces more efficiently.

Early Exploration

The discovery of the Lunar ruins seemed to galvanize humanity. Survey Command was ordered to conduct a comprehensive exploration of the Solar System in search of other possible evidence of extraterrestrial life and mineral supplies. For the first time in a century birth rates began to increase as NorCom looked towards space with boundless optimism. A new era seemed to be dawning, full of possibility and wonder.

Both NorCom and the TPA raced to place xenoarchaeology teams and settlements on Luna. The NorCom colony of Selene near the Lunar north pole soon became a burgeoning metropolis as civilian shipping lines constructed colony ships, selling tickets to anyone bored of the bland luxury of Earth. The first crude habitats were quickly replaced by graceful low-gravity architecture in caverns and domes full of lush greenery.

Major mineral deposits worth exploiting were found on Luna, Mercury, Venus, and Mars. NorCom freighters established automated mining colonies to extract the mercassium of Mercury and duranium of Venus, while Mars would become the next step on humanity's journey to the stars. Comets were found to be a particularly rich source of TransNewtonian materials, and NorCom citizens found a new motive to journey into space - profit. Civilian mining camps on Machholz, Wolf, and others rewarded their investors on Earth with wealth almost beyond imagination. These corporations sought out retired Peacekeepers to form units of mercenary guards. Guarding a robotic mining facility on a ball of ice and rock millions of kilometers from Earth was a was a rewarding but boring job until the TPA established colonies of its own on some of these locations - leading to occasional tensions and complaints from the chartered corporations.

Meanwhile on Earth, the TPA was suspected of harnessing TransNewtonian physics to create a functioning faster-than-light drive. In response NorCom funnelled massive amounts of research into the secret Project Horizon, intended to ultimately produce a working interstellar vessel of its own. In June 2400 the brilliant propulsion physicist Honda Suki completed her N-Dimensional Displacement (or "Jump") Theory. The gravitational survey vessels Horizon and Outlook, based on the Discovery-class, were rushed into service and began a search for hypothesized gravitational anomalies in the Solar System.

However, in one of the ironies of history, NorCom Intelligence obtained full gravitational survey information from TPA sources revealing the location of Sol's two jump points almost immediately after the two vessels were completed.

When Commander Granville Lodrique activated the jump drive of the experimental Stargazer at the gravitational anomaly codenamed "JP1" on April 17, 2401, he expected himself to become a smear of subatomic particles spread over a considerable volume of space.

Instead he found himself in another star system.

Exactly what star system wasn't clear. The G5-class star, randomly assigned the name Osiris, didn't correspond to anything on the local star charts, and was estimated to be relatively young at 3.52 gigayears. There were eight worlds orbiting the star, the third a terrestrial desert world with a nitrogen atmosphere tainted with methane.

Not only was Osiris III an excellent candidate for terraforming, close geographical survey of the planet revealed ancient ruins very similar to those found on Luna. For six months Osiris III was the focus of scientific speculation, both in scholarly journals and the popular media. In October the discovery of Osiris was overshadowed by the news that the language of the civilization responsible for the Luna ruins had been deciphered. Nineteen facilities created by the ancient Kingdom of Ipava, as they called themselves, were considered to be fit for recovery - remarkable given their estimated age of approximately 500,000 years. Based on the maintenance supplies and fuel found, the Ipavan outpost on Luna was theorized to be some kind of scout base.

An even more incredible discovery was made in June of 2402 when Stargazer's sister ship Pathfinder, exploring the system of Marduk beyond Sol's second jump point, found a point leading to the system of Amaterasu.

Besides boasting a breathable atmosphere (although with an average temperature of 52 degrees some degree of life support was required), Amaterasu II also possessed more ancient ruins and a complex of vast pyramidal structures, roughly ten kilometers tall.  Meanwhile on Amaterasu III Pathfinder found a cavern perfectly spherical to the limits of measurable tolerances excavated beneath the bleak and craggy surface.

NorCom shipyards rushed the construction of gravitic stabilization ships as well as two Hawking-class jump tenders intended to allow cargo and colonization ships to traverse jump points and support exploration efforts with their onboard refueling systems. Escorted by Hawking, a colonization fleet arrived at Osiris III on May 3, 2403 and the first colonists embarked on shuttles to the surface.

Humanity had become an interstellar civilization.

First Contact

The TransPacific Alliance seemed to have little interest in extrasolar exploration. Although TPA scout ships were occasionally sighted beyond Sol, they never appeared until jump points were stabilized. Was it possible the entire TPA jump program was a failed experiment or even elaborate hoax?

In any case the bloc concentrated its efforts on the Solar System, in particular the comet of Machholz. While small colonies were detected on other small bodies, Europa, and Venus, NorCom Intelligence noted nearly 400 installations on Machholz, and the comet was continually visited by large amounts of freighters. The TPA also expended considerable resources harvesting the atmospheric sorium reserves of Saturn.

The diplomatic situation between NorCom and the TPA was generally good, with a trade agreement doing much to normalize relations, but there was some cause for concern. Over 20 destroyers and large cruisers launched from TPA yards between 2402 and 2404, and TPA survey ships sometimes transmitted rude messages to NorCom vessels, particularly stabilization ships. Perhaps most concerning was evidence that NorCom's technological advantage was beginning to erode. Intelligence obtained in 2405 indicated that the TPA was designing third-generation warships with ion engine technology such as the Zhengzhou III.

The ruins in both Osiris and Amaterasu were identified as belonging to the long-vanished Kingdom of Ipava. Among other treasures, excavations uncovered eight usable Particle Beam-6 weapons and three J16000(6-750) jump drives, far in advance of NorCom technology. The alien particle beams were installed in two new Tiger-class cruisers:

The mysterious constructs existing belong the Ipavan ruins in Amaterasu were believed to date from a far earlier epoch in history, at least a hundred million years ago - if such a concept applied to star systems that the latest research had revealed were not only spread across space but according to measurements of cosmic background radiation time as well. The pyramidal structures on Amaterasu II were some form of ancient terraforming installation of incredibly advanced design that were speculated to increase research productivity in the biogenetics area by as much as 80%, while the spherical cavern on Amaterasu III was best described as an "etheric calibration chamber," boosting sensor research by nearly a third.

NorCom industry and research now had two major focuses. The first was constructing terraforming stations for Mars, Osiris, and Amaterasu and improving the technology required to make them habitable without assistance, and the second was improving realspace and jump propulsion technology. As NorCom's reach expanded it was becoming clear that the four existing Stargazer-class exploration ships were inadequate.

The new Soyuz-class explorer was 25% faster and had double the range and endurance of the Stargazers thanks to ion engines and a new compact jump drive. Furthermore, it would prove relatively easy to refit the Stargazers to the same standard, giving NorCom eight modern explorers relatively quickly.

The second Soyuz-class explorer, Mir, jumped through an unexplored jump point in the Pantagruel system beyond Osiris on her maiden voyage, entering the Jaganath system on March 31, 2408. After traversing over 5 billion kilometers to the inner system and conducting some preliminary surveys, in the morning of May 24 Mir detected two alien craft on an intercept course at 5155 kilometers per second. Within five hours six vessels closed on Mir and tore her apart with six strength-6 and 26 strength-1 blasts. Thirty-one of the crew, not including Commander Jessie Clip, survived.

A few hours later their lifepod transponders abruptly ceased transmitting.

War Clouds

Known space at the time of the Jaganath Crisis

At a closed session of Parliament Admiral Mitchell Brooks frankly admitted that Peacekeeper Command was incapable of prosecuting an interstellar war. As holographic representations of the last images transmitted by Mir hovered over the center of the room - distinctly menacing alien warships resembling prehistoric spearpoints chiseled out of obsidian - Parlimin Desiree Villasenor stood and accused Consul Guillaume Garnier of weakness and cowardice, allowing hostile aliens to prey on NorCom explorers without fear of reprisal and the TPA to syphon off the resources of the Solar System. Would the Commonwealth be a rat gnawing off the mouldering bones of alien empires in dark corners of the stars, or a lion worthy of its forerunners?

Parliament passed a defense bill mandating a military buildup with little debate. Authorized were eight new ion-powered beam destroyers of the Bellepheron class and four Nairobi-class carriers capable of carrying a squadron of eight Vampire strike fighters or four Copperhead assault shuttles.

Since the realspace distance between Earth and the inner Jaganath system was over twelve billion kilometers and the fleet's range was limited to slightly over fifteen billion kilometers, four Sahara-class tankers with a capacity of six million liters of fuel each were crucial for a successful operation. Eight new ion-powered brigade transports with drop capability would also be launched, and the ground forces expanded in both numbers and capability.

Although NorCom possessed three alien jump drives of exceptional sophistication, specialized jump ships would take up precious yard slips. Instead the Jaganath jump point would be stabilized - seen as an acceptable risk since it lay over five billion kilometers from the primary.

In 2010 Villasenor's Unity Coalition defeated Garnier's Progress Party and she took office as the new Consul. She was able to speed up war industries considerably at first, but soon resource shortages began to bite into production, particularly lack of neutronium and mercassium. The planned date of the pacification operation against the Asura, as they had come to be known, slipped back again and again.

The destroyer Acaste transited into the Jaganath system in June 2411, launching a sensor probe that revealed seventeen Asura vessels in orbit around Jaganath II and considerable ground forces on the planet before it was destroyed by a missile salvo.

Meanwhile the fleet conducted grueling training exercises, honing its edge for its first real test.

Notes on NorCom Ground Forces 2400-2412

The basic unit of NorCom Peacekeeper Ground Command was the group, roughly corresponding to a battalion and commanded by a Major or Lieutenant Colonel.

A Peacekeeper Group, basically an internal security unit, was 1600 lightly armed infantry with a command post. The Peacekeeper Brigade consisted of four Peacekeeper Groups, two redundant command posts, a security company of 400, engineer, and logistics units.

From 2404 these light troops were supplemented by Mobile Battlegroups, a combined-arms formation with two power armor-equipped mobile infantry companies, a tank company, a cavalry troop, and a logistics company for a total strength of 320 infantry, 8 CAP teams, 8 LAV teams, 18 Tempest medium contragravity tanks, 26 Cavalier hoverscouts, 16 cargo rovers, and a Centurion command vehicle.  Four of these were usually grouped into a Mobile Brigade with its own security company of 160 mobile infantry with 8 heavy weapons teams (4 CAP and 4 LAV), additional logistics, an engineer unit with 4 construction vehicles, and 24 Archer artillery vehicles. By 2410 the Mobile Brigades were being re-equipped with heavy power armor, with older units placed into reserve and replacement formations.

The STO Group had two PD batteries with eight gauss cannons each and a medium battery with six 15cm lasers coordinated from a command post.

Marine Commando companies were 500-ton boarding units designed to fit neatly into a Copperhead assault shuttle with 160 marines equipped with heavy power armor but light weapons, a supply element, and a HQ.

After contact with the Asura, the arid colony of Osiris began raising its own infantry units. An Osiran Volunteer Group had 4 desert-trained companies with a total of 600 light infantry, 32 CAP teams, 32 LAV teams, 20 cargo rovers, and a Centurion command vehicle.

The Battle for Jaganath (1)

The Commonwealth expeditionary force finally slipped its moorings on June 26, 2412, and set out for the Osiris system at maximum speed.  It would take over 22 days for the warships to arrive at the Jaganath jump point in Pantagruel, where the fleet refuelled from prepositioned tankers and made final preparations for combat. Three days later the task force transited into Jaganath for the long journey to the inner system.

Vice Admiral Kainda Mkuu's plan was simple - move directly to Jaganath II and engage the enemy. Intelligence had provided frustratingly little about Asura capabilities, but she believed that their speed advantage would be at least partially nullified by a need to hold the planet.

For 18 days her fleet sped towards the heart of Jaganath with no evidence of the enemy other than wreckage identified as the remains of TPA scout and survey vessels. Nerves began to fray as crews began to suspect they were flying blindly into an ambush. Then, on August 7, a Vampire-S scout fighter on picket duty picked up six Asura vessels on passive sensors, roughly 20 million kilometers from Jaganath II and closing fast on the task force.

Drive signatures of the incoming Asura matched those of the group that had destroyed Mir - one Amman, two Amritsans, and three Abadans. With their active sensors off, the Asura were clearly hoping to catch the task force by surprise.

Mkuu decided to give them a suprise of her own. Her Vampire strike fighters raced ahead of the main fleet and cut their engines 50 million kilometers ahead of the Asura. As the aliens closed to three million kilometers, the Vampires lit their active sensors and launched a salvo of Wasp Nest submunition dispensers at the Asura ships.

The strike lightly damaged the Amman and two Abadans, and all six Asura ships turned back towards Jaganath II.

The Amman reappeared on passive sensors early the next day, alone and unescorted, and again the fighters were launched. This time their attack cut the Amman's speed by half, enough to make a boarding attempt feasible. Two Copperhead assault transports dropped their troops on the Amman's hull. Unfortunately, the ship still retained maneuverability, and Major Jelena Melnikova and 64 marines from Alpha and Bravo Companies were lost in the drop.

Once aboard, the surviving marines faced fierce resistance from what could only be described as constructs - apparently repair machines that fought back with engineering implements and light weapons. Inch by inch the marines advanced through airless access tunnels, destroying Asura constructs as they went with massive amounts of gauss fire. Eventually the Amman was secured, with the marines finding no living crew at all.

But in a chamber deep within the ship, Major Aaron Jarvis of Alpha Company made a remarkable discovery...

The Battle for Jaganath (2)

"Survivors?" Admiral Mkuu swore under her breath incredulously. After nearly four years?

"Yes ma'am, survivors, about ninety of them. In the only pressurized compartment on the ship, some kind of...well, medical doesn't really seem like the right word." Major Jarvis seemed uncharacteristically subdued. "All comatose, hooked up to what looks like life support. Some of them...they're in bad shape, like they've been cut up and put back together again."

It took Admiral Mkuu a moment to regain her composure. "Very well. We'll send a med team along with the techs. Excellent work, Major. Lion out."

Genetic identification confirmed that 31 of the survivors found on the Amman were from the crew of Mir. The remaining 57 were presumably from the TPA survey ships whose wrecks were littering the system. After years of horror beyond imagination, it would take the best psychological care available and considerable time before they could be debriefed.

The fleet paused to recover the marines and transfer a prize crew and medics to the Amman, then proceeded to Jaganath II. As it closed to within 40 million kilometers of the planet, the fleet came under fire - three groups of 17 missiles each incoming at over 35,000 kilometers per second.

Every gauss turret in the fleet began to roar, but would they be enough?

"Splash fifty-one! All incoming neutralized!"

For three more hours the Commonwealth vessels shrugged off increasingly sporadic Asura missile salvoes as they drove closer to the planet. Four and a half million kilometers from the planet the fleet went into an extended orbit and Admiral Mkuu issued a single terse order: "All ships synchronize fire controls and fire for effect on designated targets."

Anyone interested in seeing this continue? I've accidentally gotten six years and two wars ahead of myself, plus starting over with 1.12 is looking pretty tempting now that I'm looking at invading an NPR homeworld with over a million tons of troops.

Well I was reading your fiction and I enjoyed it. Very nice illustrations of NorCom equipment.

But I completely understand the temptation of 1.12. especially in context of ground combat and new replacement mechanic. I abandoned my 1.11. game as well and I was quite deep in it with two NPRs conquered.
