Both styles can work, it all depends on what suits you as a writer the best.

"the topics as they happen" -style is more common as it's the easiest to do, you just write the update as you play. "Special focus" -style is more rare as it is a bit more work for the author but if you're willing to do it, I'd encourage that as writing about everything all the time can slow you down and get repetitive.

And wait, was this against an NPR? If so, that's really impressive!

That's kind of what I was leaning towards, I think I would enjoy writing the focused reports better.

And yes, this was against an NPR. They've existed for probably a good 30 years or more now, and I've only known about them for ~10. They've had plenty of time to build up but before this they've only sent at most a dozen ships at a time. I don't think there are words enough to describe the genuine fear I felt when the Armada was first detected.


Additional info for the after-battle cleanup: 2813 Terran crew have been recovered from lifepods, and a staggering 20456 Jiadliaokl crew. With them, interrogations have given me some wonderfully relevant information.
