Terran Federation - Part Six

The Second Expansion
26th July 2036
A new wave of exploration is begun with the transit of Survey Group 1, comprising 3 Enterprise-Class Science Vessels, into Wolf 437 from GJ 1156.  GJ 1156 currently has 6 jump points, the only known jump points out of Terran space.  Initial scans show that Wolf 347 has 2 potential colony sites – A-II with a 1. 9 habitability and A-III with a 4. 81 habitability.  Meanwhile Survey Group 2, consisting of another 3 Enterprise-Class Science Vessels, transits into Wolf 489 which initially shows no habitable planets, but a vast asteroid field numbering over 300.

28th July 2036
Survey Task Group 1 transits into the new system of Gliese 505 which is found to have 2 1. 9 habitability planets

30th July 2036
Survey Task Group 2 transits into WX Ursae Majoris.  Initial scans detect a planet with a habitability of 0. 66 – the most habitable planet ever discovered.  Wary of what happened to the original 2nd Survey Task Group in 2026, Commander Ethan Smart dispatches only 1 science vessel to approach the planet.

1st August 2036
Survey Task Group 1 enters the system of Gliese 408.  The system is notable for 2 reasons: Firstly it only contains a total of 2 planets, 1 terrestrial and 1 gas giant.  Secondly the terrestrial planet is completely habitable with no requirement for terraforming.  Fleet Command immediately orders a single science vessel to begin a close approach of the planet.

10th August 2036
Science vessels complete flybys of the both the habitable planets in WX Ursae Majoris and Gliese 408 without detecting any signs of life.  Only one jump point in GJ 1156 remains to be explored.

17th August 2036
Survey Task Group 2 enters the last unexplored in known space and discovers the system of Xi Bootis, containing of 8 planets 1 of which has a habitability of 1. 9.  Surveying will now focus on WX Ursae Majoris and Gliese 408.

14th September 2036
The primary designs for the Terran Federation have been updated to use the new Magneto-Plasma drive engines.  This has served to increase the minimum speed of Fleet units to 4800kps with the FAC groups now capable of 8000kps.  Upgrades will be rolled out to those units in service once the financial crisis has been resolved.

5th November 2036
Research is completed into a mobile terraforming module for use in ships, and the Genesis-Class Terraformer is duly designed.  No vessels are laid down due to the impending financial crisis as Earth’s wealth has now fallen below 10’000 credits.  However in the future Terraformers could replace the ground-based Terraforming installations.  In the meantime research is now focused on improving the base terraforming rate to 0. 0015atm per annum and on expanding the civilian economy.

7th December 2036
The gravitational survey of WX Ursae Majoris is completed revealing a total of 6 jump points.

8th December 2036
The gravitational survey of Gliese 408 is completed revealing a total of 4 jump points.

29th December 2036
The geological survey of Gliese 408 has been completed.  The out gas giant is found to contain of 25million tons of sorium at an accessibility of 0. 5 while the inner terrestrial planet, which is ideally habitable to humans without the need for terraforming, has 7 key mineral groups in high quantity but unfortunate low accessibility.  Gliese 408 is now a priority for colonisation as it could be essentially self sustaining.  A colonisation drive will begin once sufficient cargo vessels are available.  Currently there are 15 Alpha-Class freighters in operation transporting automated mines to Epsilon Eridani and infrastructure to the future colony in Barnards Star.

18th February 2037
The first colonists land on Barnards Star A-II, which shall now be renamed Mercia.  Enough infrastructure has been deployed over the last year for over 7 million colonists.  Despite troop deployments to Ross 154 this marks the Federation become a true interstellar polity.

27th March 2037
The 2 Hood class Light Cruisers finish construction and join the 1st Cruiser Group on training exercises.  The only ships still under construction are the 2 Churchill class Jump Cruisers, due for completion in April 2038.  Once they have trained with the 1st Cruiser Group the 2nd assault on Alpha Centauri will finally take place after almost a decade of preparation.

18th May 2037
Research is completed into expanding the Terran Federations civilian economy.  Alongside the construction of financial centres of Earth and Mars and the development of the colony on Mercia it appears the financial crisis is now over.  Even so wealth reserves remain extremely low at below 10’000 credits.

26th February 2038
A new thermal contact is suddenly detected in the Ross 154 system by the garrison left behind.  The contact emits a thermal reading of only 120 and seems to be travelling at less than 2300kps.  Initial concerns that this is a return of the Centauri are laid to rest when it is shown that the engine technology used by the new contact is demonstrably different – initial indications are that humanity has met it second alien race.  Diplomatic efforts are begun immediately to communicate with the new race.

Meanwhile the bulk of the fleet has been placed into overhaul in preparation for the Alpha Centuari offensive.  Fleet Command has overseen the construction of enough B-series missiles to replace all stocks currently in use.  In addition Fleet Command has designed and built a single Vanguard-J class FAC.  Equipped with only passive sensors and the smallest jump drive yet designed, capable of only transporting 1 ship, the Vanguard J will be used to probe the jump point ahead of the rest of the Fleet while hopefully avoiding detection because of its small size.  No ship has entered Alpha Centauri since the Debacle of 2028 and Fleet Command is planning for all eventualities.

27th February 2038
A second ship of the new race is detected in Ross 154 apparently of the same class (code named Houjian).  With much of the Fleet in overhaul the Federal Council has decided not to send in any Fleet units in order to allow diplomatic efforts to continue unimpeded.

22nd March 2038
A linguistic breakthrough is made and the alien contacts in Ross 154 identify themselves as the Commonwealth of Bigdish.  So far all contact with the Commonwealth has been peaceful.

12th April 2038
The first 2 Churchill-Class Jump Cruisers launch from NavYard Alpha and join the Cruiser squadron for training exercises.  Once they have been integrated into the battlegroup they will join up with the 1st and 2nd Destroyer Squadrons and Alpha and Beta FAC wings and transit into Alpha Centauri.  In the meantime the Vanguard J FAC is dispatched to recon the jump point.

23rd April 2038
The Vanguard J FAC transits into Alpha Centauri at 0755 GMT and is immediately overwhelmed with wreck contacts.  Both systems of the binary are littered with 27 wrecks including 6 2600ton wrecks identified as Houjian-class belonging to the Commonwealth of Bigdish and 1 wreck identified as a Centauri Loviatar-class.  No active contacts are detected within range of the FAC’s passive sensors and the FAC immediately transits back to Sol.
