The Crow-class shuttle is the new companion vehicle for the Kepler-class exploration ships.  Compared to the Kiowa-class shuttle, the Crow is faster, has much greater endurance, and it features an array of passive and active sensor systems to assist its mothercraft during exploration.  However, it can only accommodate 22 passengers (compared to 50 for its predecessor), and the complexity of the sensors required the inclusion of a systems engineer as a second crewman.

It should be noted that despite its advanced features the Crow is not the intended replacement vehicle for the Kiowa.  The Crow is specifically optimized for long-range exploration alongside the Kepler-class, a mission that the "blind" Kiowas were not really well suited for.  Meanwhile the remaining Kiowa shuttles will continue to serve as general purpose personnel-haulers until a new type of transport shuttle utilizing Magnetic Confinement Fusion Drives is available.

The Kepler-class exploration ship is, by any standard, the most advanced vessel ever constructed by the Republic.  It represents the culmination of decades' worth of slow, painstaking research aimed at producing an "invisible" stealth exploration ship.  On paper, it would certainly appear that this effort has been successful.

Compared to the Pathfinder-class ships that it will replace, the Kepler is slow and not quite as long-legged.  However, it does have a tool that Pathfinder captains have, until now, only dreamed of: a fully functional Republic Design Bureau Mk 5000/Ef5 Cloaking Device.  This incredible piece of technology reduces the 5000-ton Kepler's signature cross-section to approximately that of a 750-ton Outrider scout boat.  In essence, the Kepler simply cannot be spotted by most active sensor systems unless it is at nearly point-blank range.

The cloaking device is just one aspect of the Kepler's stealth technology.  Ancient Guardian vessels are known to occasionally mount thermal sensors, and the loud, hot thrusters in current service would surely give the ship's position away regardless of the cloaking device.  Therefore the Kepler utilizes a cool-burning, highly efficient drive thruster.  This system was developed to use new thermal reduction technology which reduces the drive's inherent thermal signature by a further 75%.  As a result, the Kepler's thermal signature is nearly 80% less than that of the Pathfinder.  This means that the Kepler's thermal profile is roughly equivalent to the output of a medium-sized fast attack craft.  When its quiet thruster is combined with the cloaking device, the Kepler is capable of performing a very credible imitation of empty space.  Of course, the ability to stay undetected is meaningless without the ability to see possible threats in the first place.  The Kepler's 500-ton thermal sensor is of the absolute newest type developed from Ancient Guardian wrecks.  Despite being just 2/3 the size of the Pathfinder's old TSS 6 thermal sensor, the new Raytheon TH10 can detect drive signatures at nearly twice the range.  The thermal sensor is supplemented by a backup EM sensor to detect active sensor sweeps.

As an exploration vessel, the Kepler mounts geo-survey and grav-survey equipment.  It also features a small buoy launcher to mark jump points.  Finally, like the Pathfinder before it, the Kepler has a small hangar bay.  An updated version of the Kiowa is being considered as a companion ship for this class.

The Kepler does have some drawbacks.  It is totally unarmed, basically unarmored, and as previously mentioned, it is quite slow.  This is mainly due to the weight of the cloaking device.  Although it has been heavily miniaturized, the cloak still accounts for 20% of the ship's mass.  Therefore, in order to keep the ship's total weight to the lowest possible cloaking size of 5,000 tons, only a single thruster could be used.  During very long deployments this lack of redundancy could, potentially, leave a ship stranded.  Therefore Kepler captains will need to closely monitor their maintenance supplies.  On the other hand, the ship's small size and single thruster further contribute to its low detectability.  The single thruster also provides better fuel efficiency than a dual-thruster arrangement.

The first two Kepler-class exploration ships are under construction at the new Gearheart Shipbuilding yards at Horizon, with an estimated delivery date near the very end of December, 2063.  At least 6-8 of these ships are planned for the first run of production.

The Ark Royal-class light carrier was designed as a modern starfighter platform to relieve the slow Red Oak Victory-class fleet support vessels from carrier duties (a role the FSV's were never intended for).  At 35,000 tons the Ark Royal is only slightly smaller than the monstrous Mars-class cruisers.   That being said, this ship is fast and well equipped to perform its role.  With 10,000 tons of hangar space the carrier can support up to 3 Starhawk squadrons of 8 fighters each, with enough capacity left over for two or three additional shuttles or other specialist craft.  To further cement its role the carrier has increased fuel and maintenance capacity, as well as generous flight crew berthing.  It also features a generous magazine capacity, both for itself and for any future classes of missile-armed fighters.

In terms of weaponry, the Ark Royal's armament is purely defensive in nature.  The only ranged firepower consists of a quartet of anti-missile launchers.  In order to simplify production the launchers, sensors, and fire control system all mirror the arrangement of the Nautilus-class missile boat.  The active sensors are further supplemented by backup EM and Thermal passive sensors.  While the Navy's standard railgun/laser arrangement is noticeably absent here, the Ark Royal does boast a trio of new-model Phalanx II point-defense cannons.  Finally, the carrier features modest type-5 armor supplemented by a strength-20 energy shield.  Armament was kept intentionally light due to the fact that this ship should not be placed directly in combat.  As a carrier, its fighters are its weapons.

The first two ships in the class are currently under construction at the Robson-Coles Graving shipyard at Earth, and are slated for delivery in early December 2063.

The formidable Mars-class cruiser is the Republic's most recent expression of "quality over quantity."  These ships are heavily armed and heavily armored brutes designed to punch their way out of any situation they might encounter.  Their weapons include a dozen size-5 missile launchers, six anti-missile tubes, four 15cm lasers, and four 12cm railguns.  The lasers and railguns are all powered by a pair of advanced 12-gigawatt tokomak energy reactors.  Meanwhile the ammo magazines are of the newest and safest types, while the ship itself is plated in generous armor protection that is also supplemented by no less than twenty shield generators.

The Mars is also armed with a completely new weapon system, the size-20 Sunstrike anti-ship torpedo.  The Sunstrike uses a pair of the largest-possible missile engines to propel it to a speed of 35,000 km/s.  It is believed that a single hit from this weapon will achieve a hull penetration on any Ancient Guardian ship that has yet been encountered, or completely destroy a smaller ship.  Although it has yet to be used in combat, current doctrine states that the Sunstrike should be used to destroy priority targets at point-blank range.

In addition to its active arrays the Mars-class also features small backup thermal and EM sensors, ECM and ECCM systems, and a tractor beam.  The integral hangar deck can accommodate a wide variety of mission profiles.  Finally, the inclusion of a Flag Bridge allows the Mars to perform as a fleet flagship.

Due to the large amount of manpower and resources needed to field these ships, it is unlikely that more than a few will ever be fielded, at least for now.

The Mitsubishi Corporation's Nautilus-class missile boat is a smaller, less expensive, and less crew-intensive alternative to the Moray-class frigates.  Armed solely with four of Raytheon's new quick-firing Size 1 missile launchers, these ships are expressly intended for anti-missile and anti-small-craft work.  Due to tonnage concerns the active sensor array is somewhat smaller than that found on the Moray, but it is still more than enough to detect enemy missiles at a comfortable distance.  Although it is a small ship, the Nautilus features enough armor protection to safely absorb three or four hits from size 12 warheads.  It also boasts generous ammunition capacity.

Kiowa-class shuttles are a common sight through the fleet.  These tiny craft feature berthing for 50 adult humans, making them ideal for passenger transport, search and rescue operations, or light courier work.  Historically they have also been an important companion ship for the Pathfinder-class explorers.

For many years it was standard practice for most new Fleet officers to be assigned a Kiowa as their first posting.  Now that the Starhawk is entering widespread service this is typically no longer the case.  As a result, some newly commissioned officers have come to view assignment to a Kiowa as a dumping ground for unskilled bus-drivers who don't fit anywhere else.  This is unfortunate, because as the older officers who flew it remember, the Kiowa has served with distinction.  The history of the Kiowa is the history of the Navy.

Although some Kiowas are now nearing their third decade of service, Space Command remains satisfied with their performance.  No improved variant is planned at this time.

The Farsight-class High Endurance Frigate is the replacement platform for the Pathfinder-class.  The Farsight itself does not have any survey capability, but instead relies on its attached craft to perform that duty.  This ship is tough and has reasonable firepower, but as demonstrated at Wolf 636, a wise captain should not expect it to handle everything it comes across.  That being said, the Farsight is equally comfortable performing alone or as a component of a larger fleet.

From 2056-2058 all of the Fleet's major combatants underwent a series of Mk II upgrade refits.  The most important component of this upgrade series was the exchange of each ship's older Magneto-Plasma drives for the new, much more powerful Internal Confinement Fusion Drives.  Pound for pound, the ICFD offers a 25% improvement in thrust over an equivalent Magplas drive.  Each ship also received major upgrades in sensors and fire control.  All military ships save the Akizuki now utilize Ceramic-Composite armor, and the Moray and Luna now feature shield generators as well.

The Mark II upgrade to the Akizuki-class missile boat utilizes a compact Longbow-series fire control system.  The tonnage saved from this upgrade was used to add 5 additional box launchers.

Introduced: 2048

The Moray-class frigate benefited greatly from its Mk II upgrade.  The improved fire control and sensor systems offer a 50% improvement in range for half the weight of previous models.  Armor protection has been slightly improved for less overall weight.  An array of shield generators provide a further layer of protection.  The Mk II upgrade also adds a trio of 10cm railguns.

Most importantly, the improved "Flash" anti-missile missiles represent a vast improvement over the anemic Dart AMMs.

The Luna-class destroyer is currently the largest fighting ship in use by the Fleet.  Although some planners have argued over whether the Republic's largest combatant should be classified as a mere destroyer, Space Command has plans for much larger ships in the future.

The Mk II variant of the Luna is considerably stronger than the original version.  Armor protection has been increased by 25% for less overall weight, and five shield generators were added as well.  The 10cm railguns have been replaced with 12cm railguns, which offer the same rate of fire but with longer range and more damage potential.  The Luna uses the same common pool of upgraded sensors and electronics that are in use throughout the Fleet.

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

The Red Oak Victory-class Fleet Support Vessels are technically not warships, although they are built to military standards.  Still, this class has provided vital service during several extended naval operations.  The Mk II upgrade features enhanced ICFD engines, but all other systems remain the same.  While moderately armored, this vessel should avoid combat because its large magazines are vulnerable to shock damage.

The onboard hangar bays are primarily intended for reloading Akizuki-class missile boats in the field.  However, because the Republic currently lacks dedicated carriers, on several occasions these ships have been used to deploy Starhawk squadrons.
