About Ground Formations.
« on: June 11, 2022, 09:56:53 AM »
Getting back in to the game after a while. I had a question about ground formations.
So when you have lets say a batallion with units should the one above, for example division, have the supporting elements or something else?

Infantry Division (with artillery, supply and so on...)
--Infantry Batallion
--Infantry Batallion
...
 OR

Just the HQ

Infantry Division (with just an HQ)
--Infantry Batallion
--Infantry Batallion
--Support Batallion (with artillery, supply and so on...)
...
And how does replacing destroyed units work? Thank you for whoever can answer.

Currently, it makes the most sense usually to place the support elements (artillery, construction, supply, etc.) into higher-level HQs because of the way leader promotions work - ground force commanders always promote in a 3:1 ratio between lower and higher ranks, so you don't want to "waste" low-rank leaders on support formations which could be higher-rank instead.

In v2.0 officer promotions will be on-demand so you can do whatever you want. In this case you might have the artillery for example as low-rank formations alongside the line formations, and a "flatter" HQ structure with only a few ranks and the HQ formation has other support elements (logistics, etc.).

You can rebuild manually or use the Unit Series and Replacements feature from 1.12 onwards.

Having them in the HQ formation also helps with calculating how large the HQ itself needs to be since it has to handle itself and all it's sub-formations. If all the sub-formations are the same size, say 5000 tons, then that makes your life a lot easier as you start forming higher level HQs
