Ship Building Lore question
« on: January 17, 2020, 12:57:20 AM »
Just wanted to know what the cannon lore for shipbuilding is.  Specifically if ship (any kind)  are built on the surface of planets or in orbit?

Fighters and Orbital Habitats are built on the ground in Fighter Factories and Construction Factories respectively. Everything else (sans PDCs, which technically are ships, but not really... they're weird.) is built in orbit.

Yeah... Fighters are basically built in ground factories and actually can land on planets.

Orbital habitats are also built on planets factories but they certainly are assembled in space. They are not built in its entirety on the planet... but this is just an abstract thing though. Mechanically they are built on the ground.

Everything is built on the ground (though space stations are assembled in orbit), takes off from the ground, and lands on the ground (though sometimes, only once).  Some craft are hard-surface capable, others water-only, though most are both.

There is this annoying bug that allows tractor beams to lock onto shipyards and "move" them around -- even steal them completely!  Steve refuses to fix it, so I use SpaceMaster to set things right.

In other words, "cannon lore" is whatever you decide it is.  Even if you sometimes have to fight the software to make it so.

While there is no canon lore as Father Tim points out, in VB6 ships land on planets despite being built in orbit. In C# they will no longer land at planets at all which is why Cargo Handling System got renamed to Cargo Shuttle System. But you're free to make up your own version to suit your story and world.
