Has anyone managed first contact without SM?

I can't figure out how to get aliens to heave to and talk to me without using SM to establish communications. Is there some trick to it that I don't know, or is it broken right now?

EDIT: No, I don't mean shooting them. I can get that to happen just fine, wise guys.

Lasers, Particle Beams, Railguns, Plasma Carronades, and if nothing else missiles.

Might be a little loose on "communicating"...  ;)

I think there was a bug with communications in one of the earlier 1.7.x versions, if you update then it will probably be fixed.
