The first design of the ‘Catfish’ never saw production, but served as a template for the revisions to follow. Named for its blunt prow, studded by the ‘whiskers’ of its gravitational sensor and missile fire control system, the design suffered from a slow top speed and limited armament, largely due to the weight penalty of its steel hull.

The Kingdom’s first bomber design to reach production, the B-1/B was a major redesign of the original model that made use of the weight savings of its composite hull to mount a second engine and a third missile rack. These changes made it significantly faster than the Arnica-class Gunship that was its design partner, and a squadron of B-1/Bs could match its throw weight in number of munitions.

The ultimate evolution of the ‘Catfish’ series, the B-1/C once again featured a near complete redesign of the airframe that took advantage of advanced composites. The twin engines of the B-1/B were replaced with a single, larger engine, and a fourth missile rack was added to the design, with two pylons on each wing. The larger engine was more efficient than the twin engines of the B-1/B, and gave the B-1/C half again as much range alongside a higher top speed despite being four tons heavier.

The B-2/B model of the Black Ghost was a testament to Trans Newtonian technology. With a redesigned and far sleeker hull made of Duranium and powered by the first TN strike craft engine, it was far faster and with a far greater range than the B-1/C ‘Catfish’. The sole difference between the B-1/A and /B models were the upgraded sensors and fire control system.

Designed as a replacement for the two models of B-2s in service, the Triggerfish was faster and more heavily armed. It was also the last bomber produced by the Kingdom, as the Royal Decree following the First Naval Battle of Mercury requiring all nuclear weapons to be controlled by Royal Commissars precluded their deployment aboard small craft.

The F-3/A ‘Heron’ was the Kingdom’s first attempt at a fighter. Its design goal was to be able to intercept and down hostile strike craft and torpedoes, as well as provide escort to the bomber squadrons. For this purpose, it was equipped with the RN/FGP-16 sensor - while far shorter ranged than the RN/FGA-10 of the Black Ghost, the Heron’s sensor was optimized to the point of being able to detect and engage small, fast moving missiles and torpedoes. Its downfall was the slow rate of fire of its railgun system - 1 shot every 5 seconds.

A simple refit of the F-3/A model, the /B sports a new hull and faster engine, but retains the same single-shot railgun system. In combat, the lack of firepower proved the design’s downfall.

The Arnica-class Gunship was the Kingdom’s first warship effort, and remained its only Newtonian ship design. It went through a number of design revisions as the materials science of the hull advanced. Unlike the B-1 ‘Catfish’ series, its general design changed little over the years, the advances in hull materials mostly allowed the designers to add a modicum of armor plating and increase its throw weight.

While an unsuccessful design in comparison to later Trans-Newtonian ships, the Arnica-class provided the Kingdom with vital ship design and building experience. It also gave rise to the smaller Gunboat designs that followed its design philosophy of offering a devastating alpha strike in a small package.

The Arnica-B modification of the original design was more extensive than the designers wanted, a result of design oversights in the original model as well as advances from TN technology. The heart of the Arnica-B redesign was stripping and rearmoring the hull in Duranium, removing the conventional engines and replacing them with 3 L-AEL engines of the same type as were developed for the Emerald class, and the removal of the Type I external racks. The space freed up from doing so allowed the designers to add an auxiliary bridge and larger fuel tanks, extending the design’s range. Notably, it retained the scant 3 month deployment time and remained notably slower than its successor Redoubt and Steil designs.

The last model of the Arnica series, the -C refit replaced the Fire Control System to take advantage of the increased range of modern torpedoes, as well as adding an additional four external hardpoints.  The First Naval Battle of Mercury proved the power of the Arnica’s alpha strike capability, but also the weakness as the otherwise unarmed design as the combatants ignored the model after its strike.

The Ceres-class Armored Cruiser was conceived as a fire support platform to aid the Royal Army with naval fire support. To that end, it was equipped entirely with energy weapon systems - half a dozen each of lasers and plasma carronades, a railgun battery of four fast-firing second generation railguns, and a pair of experimental particle beam weapons. Alongside its significant energy armament, the Ceres-class was heavily armored in four layers of newly developed composite armor and shielded by two second generation Beta shield generators.

Unfortunately, the design was unsuccessful in its primary mission - naval fire control directors likened attempting to walk naval fire unto hostile targets ‘trying to swat flies with a sledgehammer while blindfolded’. During the First Naval Battle of Mercury, they proved their worth by absorbing vast amounts of punishment. The success of their laser turrets in both offensive and defensive roles informed the Navy’s subsequent designs as work was put into developing gauss cannon turrets to replace the railgun batteries used to that point.

The Steil class Corvette was designed as a smaller escort companion to the Redoubt class destroyer. It manages to possess a similar range, speed and passive defenses to its larger cousin, alongside a sensor suite optimized to detect and engage hostile torpedoes. However, it does so at the cost of its offensive capability. The design carries only four light missile launchers and a single railgun, leaving it incapable of effectively engaging offensively.

The Steil-B was a controversial refit. The three Lightspeed I engines were larger than its original engine block, and put the design nearly 300t overweight. The only major weight savings available to the engineers was to remove its shield generator. However, the space freed up allowed the designers to increase the hull armor and add two more light missile launchers to the design.

The Redoubt is the first design of the so-called ‘Fast Fleet’ movement in the Navy. With more than 40% of its mass devoted to engines and fuel, the design sacrifices passive defenses and weaponry to achieve its higher speed. Despite the different weight distribution, the design is quite a bit sturdier than the Arnica-B that it replaced, marking the first use of energy shields in Kingdom Naval design, alongside a battery of three 10cm railguns that are useful in both an offensive and defensive role.

The Emerald-class was the Kingdom’s first survey ship. Its initial design was nearly 1,100 tons heavier and included three RN/MOA-8 sensors. Removing one of those bulky sensors allowed a revision of the proposed engine block, which allowed for a smaller fuel tank and less engineering space needed. The final form became the survey ship that mapped the Sol system.

While suitable for work in the inner system, it was noticeable that the greater distances of the Oort Cloud resulted in many extra trips as the design simply spent too great a percentage of its deployment time and fuel simply on reaching and returning from its survey areas.

The -B refit of the Emerald class included replacing the hull with High-Density Duranium and an engine refit, replacing the original pair with a single engine of the same model as the rest of the fleet was using. This simplified maintenance across the fleet while almost doubling the Emerald class’s range.

When the Kingdom discovered the ruins of the Terra Federation scattered through the Sol system, they also discovered that the Federation had left a legacy - the Legions of Iron, robotic warriors designed to supplement and support their armed forces. These tireless sentries continued to watch over the ruins of the fallen civilization, and the Kingdom was forced to fight them for every ruin.

The Rio Grande-class was a simple solution that allowed the Kingdom to field a Regiment-sized force anywhere in the Sol system. A group of five operating together could deploy an entire Division within three days.

It did have a number of shortcomings - its troop accommodations were quite spartan as a result of their need to modularly fit everything from an infantry regiment to battalions of medium Armigers, it was very slow, and it was completely undefended and unarmored, requiring an escort from the Navy anywhere it went.
