Captainwolfer's ship designs
« on: September 20, 2022, 11:27:19 AM »
So, I figured I would post my ship designs for feedback. I operate ships in squadrons of 4 (3 ships + 1 jump variant).

Here are some of my designs from my current game.

The goal is an affordable particle beam cruiser that relies on shields rather than armor. The 10cm railguns are primarily for PD, although at point blank range they have way more dps than the particle beams.
Code: [Select]

For every 3 Napoleons I also have 1 Defiant class Jump Cruiser, to provide squadron jump capability

Future refit plans are to use the smaller jump drive designs I am researching to fit a few particle beams back on the Defiant class, and eventually I want to replace some of the particle beams with particle lances, once I unlock them.
Obviously, they aren't as fast as they could be, but I am hoping that the cost savings in not going faster will make up for it.

This definitely comes down to preference, but I would be very nervous with only 1 armor level. Looking at it another way, the shields are only the equivalent of 1 1/2 armor levels (though of course, shields have to beaten entirely rather than poke holes). Armament looks good though. As long as you out-speed/out-range the enemy you should be good.

Yeah, normally I rely on armor and don't really use shields, but this run I want to use shields almost exclusively. So far, I've had two engagements with missile armed Spoilers. The railguns had no trouble with the anti ship missiles, only with AMM spam. The shields allowed me to take no hull damage while I decided if my ships could handle the amount of AMMS leaking, but I decided to retreat and build a pair of AMM destroyers, more to distract enemy AMMs rather than actually intercept missiles. So I did end up needing 15 cruisers and 2 DDs to deal with just an AMM base and AMM ship without taking damage (there were also other ships, but they posed minimal threat compared to AMMs).

I'll probably bump their speed up to 6000 km/s once I get Ion engines, as that will be faster than the spoiler ships I've seen so far.
