Royal Navy of WWII in Aurora
« on: April 06, 2014, 12:04:18 PM »
I have recently been playing some Hearts of Iron 3 and got to thinking, what would a direct translation of WWII naval ships into Aurora look like?  The answer as you will find out is big and heavy.  For my first experiment I decided to design copies of the ships attached to the British Royal Navy Home Fleet of September 1939.  This comes to (deep breath in) 5 Battleships, 3 Battlecruisers, 1 Heavy Cruiser, 5 Light Cruisers, 1 Anti-aircraft Cruiser, 2 Carriers, 1 Seaplane Carrier, 17 Destroyers, 1 Destroyer Tender, 22 Submarines, 2 Submarine Tenders, 7 Minesweepers, and lastly 14 Patrol Boats.

What I found when I first started was that the mass of the ships would have to be massively increased as the components used in Aurora are a lot larger than what would be used in real ships, at least when it comes to WWII ships, so it would be impossible to have the same ship with the same tonnage.  Therefore I decided to increase the mass of all ships by 10x, that is to say, a 2 500 ton Destroyer would become 25 000 tons, and a 8 100 ton Destroyer Tender would become 81 000 tons etc.  Secondly I decided to take the posted speed of the WWII ships and increase them to something approaching ~360 000x; 36 knots (67 km/h) would become 6 700 km/s and so on.

For the weapons systems I decided that Main weapons would be Lasers, while Secondary and Tertiary weapons would be Lasers, Mesons, or Microwave Guns, and Anti-aircraft guns would be Gauss Cannons.  In regards to sensors, even if the actual WWII ship had no radar whatsoever, each ship would need to be able to independently spot its supposed targets it being impossible to visually spot and target targets at the ranges used in Aurora.

So far I have designed the following, which I will be posting below; the Tribal and F Class Destroyers, the Greenwich class Destroyer Tender, the C Class (Carlisle Group) Anti-aircraft Cruiser, and the Arethusa Class Light Cruiser.  All ships will be using mostly Ion Tech level components, with the exception of fire rate on Gauss Cannons which I pushed up to 8 per 5 seconds, and of course when I get to them the size of Battleship guns.  I have included a link to the source(s) I have been using in the name of the different classes.

To start then the Tribal Class Destroyer:

I should probably mention now that I am using 3 Tracking speeds; 10 000 km/s for anti-ship guns, 15 000 km/s for guns that should be used as mixed anti-ship / anti-missile guns and 20 000 km/s for dedicated anti-missile guns.  I will also most likely not use CIWS at all.

Main armament for the Tribal Class Destroyer are 3x 4.7" (12cm) Twin UV Laser Turrets, with a single 4" (10cm) Twin UV Laser Turret as an extra mid range anti-fighter / anti-missile gun.
Anti-missile armament consists of 1x Quad Gauss Cannon Turret using 1.5HS Gauss Cannons, and 2x Twin Gauss Cannon Turrets using 0.6HS Gauss Cannons
For torpedo equivalents I have used large single use missile launchers, currently they are at full size, although the lack of reloads carried on the ship itself means I could possibly use reduced size Launchers.  The missile itself is marked as a prototype as I am unsure as to a) its effectiveness and b) whether I should use a single large Missile or a larger number of smaller missiles.  Current Tech is limited to a 4x engine power modifier in missiles, this could probably be improved without much hassle I suppose.  I have also not included any Depth Charge launchers, mainly as I am unsure as to what their equivalent in Aurora would be.

Question: Can I stuff say, 4 size 4 missiles in a single size 16 launcher and shoot them all at the same time? Or am I limited to only a single missile per launcher?

The Home Fleet in September 1939 had 8 Tribal Class Destroyers in the 6th Destroyer Flotilla organised into 2 4-ship Divisions.

The Leader variant has an extra 4" (10cm) Single UV Laser Turret, and similar Sensors to the Tribal class.  In reality the F class was 3 generations behind the Tribal Class Destroyers, which is shown with the reduced anti-missile armament, the extra 2 missile launchers, and reduced operational range.

The Home Fleet had 8 F Class and 1 F-Leader Class Destroyers making up the 8th Destroyer Flotilla, again organised into 2 4-ship Divisions.

The HMS Greenwich was the assigned Destroyer Tender for the Home Fleet Destroyer Flotillas. All I could easily find about it was that it was 8 100 tons, it had 5 guns and had a speed of 11 knots (20 km/h)

Its main armament is rather anaemic consisting of 2x 4" (10cm) Twin UV Laser Turrets and a single Twin Gauss Cannon Turret using 2HS Gauss Cannons.  However it carries enough fuel to completely refuel all 8 Tribals from empty, a large number of maintenance supplies and a small amount of replacement Missiles.  I am not sure whether to decrease the amount of maintenance supplies in order to fit more replacement missiles in however.

Hmm, this post is getting a bit long, so I'll finish this off here and use a second to post up the 2 Cruiser designs I have at the moment.  Some final words then, I haven't tested these in a game yet however I do intend to.  Looking at them I can see I'm probably going to come across a couple of problems with the lack of jump drives, hugely inflated costs in terms of both raw materials and crew required to build them, and possibly failing to be able to defend against enemy missile attacks.  The low speed of my 'torpedoes' will be helped with a tiny bit more research in engine power, so hopefully I can increase the speed to something like 15 000 - 20 000 km/s, although I am hopeful that the large amount of armour on them (3 layers) means that they might penetrate enemy point defence.

I have 2 Cruiser designs finished at the moment, the C Class AA Cruiser and the Arethusa Class Light Cruiser.  One thing I noticed about these is that using my 10x increased mass designs I ended up with about 50% mass being made up of engines to get the required speeds, I could decrease this by using increased power engines, but then I would have to use the saved space to put in fuel in order to keep a sensible range for Cruiser type ships.

So, firstly the C Class (Carlisle) Anti-aircraft Cruiser

The C Class has roughly the same amount of guns as a Tribal Class Destroyer but it has increased armour and a massively increased range.  I am thinking that these would be used to escort the main fleet and provide point defence while the destroyers would assist with system defence.  Main armament is 5x 4" (10cm) Twin Turrets with a 20 000 km/s tracking speed, for close in defence they have 2x Quad Gauss Cannon Turrets using 1.5HS  Gauss Cannons.  Again, 8x Size 16 armoured missiles are used in place of Torpedoes.
As the C Class (Carlisle Group) were used as anti-aircraft cruisers I have given them a larger Missile Tracking Sensor, and both a Resolution 10 and Resolution 20 sensor with a standard sized general purpose Resolution 200 sensor in order to find larger targets.  Earlier I noted that I was using a large amount of engines, this has given me for the first time ever a ship that carries enough fuel to last nearly its entire deployment time. Woo! Go me! =P

In 1939 the Home Fleet had one of these ships (HMS Calcutta) attached to it.

The Arethusa Class has a more standard Light Cruiser loadout;
Main armament consists of 3x 6" (15cm) Twin UV Laser Turrets, with the secondary guns being 4x 4" (10cm) Single Laser Turrets.  These are all lightly armoured.
The Arethusa class, as a more advanced Light Cruiser design still has a large amount of Point Defence guns, 4x Single Gauss Cannon Turrets using 0.6HS Gauss Cannons and 2x Quad Gauss Cannon Turrets using the 1.5HS Gauss Cannons.
In the Sensor department they have a standard sized Area Search (resolution 200) and Missile Tracking sensors and a large resolution 20 sensor.  The design also calls for a flying boat, erm, strike craft to be used as a reconnaissance craft.

I am not happy with the design as it is at the moment however I would appreciate any input to improve it, I was thinking about researching an increase to engine power, which would allow me to decrease the size of the engine and increase the size of the sensor as it has a rather poor range.

There was 1 Arethusa class Light Cruiser in the Home Fleet in 1939, it was attached as the Squadron Flagship to the 18th Cruiser Squadron.

This is all I have done at the moment, I am working on the Town class Light Cruisers and will continue until I have all the different ship classes completed.  Although I am not sure how they would play, would any of you be interested if I posted up the rest when they are done?

Secondly I decided to take the posted speed of the WWII ships and increase them to something approaching ~100x; 36 knots (67 km/h) would become 6 700 km/s and so on.

I just wanted to point out that the speed was not increased by 100 times.

You also changed the unit "divided by hour" to "divided by second" which means the speed is actually increased by a further 3'600 times (amount of seconds in one hour). So in total speed was increased about 360'000 times.

D'oh! Fixed, thanks, I'll try and think of a better way of putting it later.

Question: Can I stuff say, 4 size 4 missiles in a single size 16 launcher and shoot them all at the same time? Or am I limited to only a single missile per launcher?

I think it is only possible to do this by using a two stage missile, were the second stage are multiple smaller missiles.

However if I was going for the "Torpedo" feel and look I would stick to a single big one. Possibly even getting a slower missile with armour to protect it ( to better mimic a slower moving torpedo that is hard to hit ships with, but also hard to knock out ).

If you are using Ion Engines it would probably be easier to just say 36 knots equal 3600 km/s in speed, pretty simple conversion that is more in tune with that engine type.

One big difference with Aurora and WWII naval ships is that the engine and fuel usually take up much more space than in a wet navy, therefore also taking away space for weapons and so on.

That, actually makes more sense than what I did... My thought was that tens of Km/h obviously goes into thousands of km/s.  But putting tens of knots into thousands of km/s would make things somewhat simpler, although then I would have to figure out what to do with the extra space, more fuel and maintenance supplies maybe?

Why not simply convert knots into 100km/s, this would help with the size as well. This would help with the multiplier as well, since staying at 10x would mean a 220k Ark Royal, which would translate to about 140 fighters/bombers with roughly 1/3 of the tonnage dedicated to hangar space, not sure about the real number of planes here, but about 1/3 at best sounds right at best. So maybe try a 4x multiplier.

Dang, the speed idea was already mentioned ;)

I have redesigned the Tribal class to use the speed conversion 1 knot = 100 km/s, with the space gained by reducing the speed required I was able to use more efficient engines increasing unassisted range, allowing me to increase deployment time.  I also was able to add an additional Damage Control module and lastly to add in more Engineering Bays and Maintenance Storage Bays increasing maintenance life by 1.57 years.

It's an OK(ish) design and part of me prefers it to the former, its cheaper, quicker to build and has 18 more hit points.  But it's just so slow, the entire fleet is essentially beam armed, at the sizes I'm using a size 4 missile (my standard anti-ship missile for anything else) would barely scratch the paint off a Heavy Cruiser, never mind a Battleship.  To ensure my slow large missiles hit without getting blown up by anti-missiles I would have to launch them at around 5-10 seconds out, which is again, beam range.  So against NPR's at similar tech I would expect to have to chase after them getting hammered by pin pricks, but I would be unable to close in anything like reasonable time, standard speeds of Ion level ships being around 3000 to 4000 km/s.

Wow, that last paragraph was full of whine... anyway, what I think I'm trying to say is that while I'm glad I did this design, if just to see what it would look like I think I'll stick to the 1 km/h = 100 km/s speed conversion, see where that takes me.

@CharonJr: Your idea is good, but unfortunately the 10x size multiplier is necessary as just the weapons, the sensors and power necessary to run those weapons and armour comes to about 9000 tons, taking 30% of total weight for the engines, then putting in the support modules brings it up to just under 17000 tons. That's not including any E-War or Damage Control modules.  As to the size of the Arc Royal, over the last few days I have completed the rest of the designs, and she's a rather inflated 317 450 tons.  I ended up adding quite a bit of extra weight in order to get her speed up to proper levels.  For her fighter complement I went with 500 ton fighters, while I could maybe make them 250t, any smaller and I would be better off using drones, and they are unrecoverable which makes them useless as a fighter craft replacement.

I'll be posting up the rest of the capital ships tomorrow morning, with the submarines and other auxiliaries in the evening I think.

These are general purpose Light Cruisers, with armoured 6" triple turrets as main armament, and point defence spec armoured 4" twin turrets as secondary guns.  The turrets have an armour rating of 2, given that I couldn't find anywhere that said what unit of measurement Aurora uses for the armour columns I decided that each column would stand for 0.5" and have applied this consistently throughout the fleet.
The differences between the two sub-classes is that the Edinburgh sub-class has 2 extra secondary turrets and 2 extra 2" quad gauss cannon turrets as well as a slightly increased speed.

The Troop capacity was mainly added to make up the tonnage needed to get to ~10x the weight of the original version.

In the Home Fleet of 1939 there were 2 Town (Southampton) Class Light Cruisers and 2 Town (Edinburgh) Class Light Cruisers attached to 18th Cruiser Squadron.

The Supermarine Walrus that these ships carry is a 480 ton sea(space) plane that is carried by most Heavy Ships in a reconnaissance role.

Strike Group
2x Supermarine Walrus I Recon Fighter   Speed: 10000 km/s    Size: 9.6

The main armament are (is?) 4 twin 8" (20cm) armoured turrets, while secondary armament consists of 4 twin 4" armoured turrets.  These have a rather heavy point defence armament (especially for Heavy Cruisers) which is why it doesn't have any torpedo capacity.  Again, the Strike Group has 2 Walrus reconnaissance fighters to allow for extended sensor coverage.

There was 1 County (Norfolk) Class Heavy Cruiser attached to 18th Cruiser Squadron in 1939.

In the Battlecrusier Squadron of the Home Fleet there were 2 Renown Class Battlecruisers and the unique Admiral Class HMS Hood.  Firstly, the Renown Class.

This is a fast, heavy ship, only the HMS Hood, and the Nelson class Battleships are heavier and of the Capital ships only the HMS Arc Royal and HMS Hood are faster.
Main guns are 3 twin armoured 15.7" turrets, the original called for 15" guns, which comes to ~37.5 cm, as such I increased the size to 40 cm, rather than decrease them to 35 cm.  Secondary guns are 10 twin armoured 4.7" dual purpose guns, while point defence is handled by 6 quad 2" gauss cannons.  To help with survivability, I have given the E-War modules a backup module, and used a rather large amount of Damage Control modules.

Saying that however, a swarm of fast meson armed fighters would murder most of my heavy ships as they ignore armour completely.  Moving on, the Admiral Class battlecruiser HMS Hood

These are first world war ships that had no, or very limited refits carried out during the inter-war years, as a result they are lighter than the other heavy ships and a lot slower.  While they have a slightly heavier secondary armament than the Nelson class they have a greatly reduced point defence capacity.

The Nelson class Battleships were the most heavily armed ships in the Royal Navy at the start of WW2 with HMS Nelson serving as the flagship for the Home Fleet.  There were 2 of these ships attached to the 2nd Battle Squadron in 1939.

Strike Group
2x Fairey Swordfish I Missile Bomber   Speed: 12000 km/s    Size: 10

The main armament consists of 9 15.7" (40cm) guns in 3 triple armoured turrets, the armour on these turrets is ~20 rows thick (account for an average thickness of about 9-10 inches). Secondary guns are 6 twin 6" turrets, again armoured quite heavily, while tertiary guns are dual purpose 4.7" (15cm) guns in single turrets.  Point defence is handled by a mix of 20mm (0.6HS) twin gun Gauss Cannon turrets, and 2" (1.5HS) quad gun Gauss Cannon turrets, giving the ability to put out 512 shots per 5 second interval at 40 000 km and a combined 1000 shots per 5 second interval at 30 000 km.

The Fairey Swordfish design will be in the next post with the carriers.

So, last post of the morning, erm, afternoon?  ::)

Anyway, here are the carriers and their strike groups

Firstly HMS Ark Royal.  As a side note, I've seen 2 different spellings of this in various places, Ark spelled with a k and Arc spelled with a c, can anyone tell me which one is correct?

6x Blackburn Roc Fighter-bomber   Speed: 12121 km/s    Size: 9.9

As you can see, she is a rather bloated design, strictly she should be ~220-280ktons but speed requirements and magazine space took up more space than expected.  Also, I'm not happy with the limited fuel, but there's not much I can do about that.  Strike Group is a maximum of 60 fighters, while the posted strike group is what she had attached at the outbreak of war.  Magazine space accounts for 10 reloads if 60 Swordfish MBs are loaded.

Secondly, the Courageous (Glorious sub-class) class.  HMS Furious was the Carrier of this class attached to the Home Fleet in 1939, HMS Furious was its own sub-class within the Courageous class, but the other 2 ships of the class conformed to the Glorious specifications, therefore I decided to use a mix of them both for some reason, which I have now forgotten.

Again, this class has enough magazine space for 10 reloads with a full capacity of Swordfish MBs, and, as seems pretty standard for a converted carrier, the point defence guns are rather inadequate.

Lastly the Pegasus class Light Carrier / Sea (space) plane carrier.

There's not much to say about this, it has enough Hanger space to handle 8 Supermarine Walrus' and enough magazine space to hold their missiles, I added the troop space for a single Brigade in order to increase the tonnage a bit.

So, the Strike Craft that are to be used, there are 3 different classes, the Fairey Swordfish, which fires a single 20" torpedo, and the Blackburn Roc and Blackburn Skua which are used for mixed anti-shipping anti-fighter duty.

can't say I've ever seen it spelt with a c

This attachment,  will let the ship speak for itself,  Nameplate on R.07
Even though this is off the last ship of this name, rather than the WWII version,  all 5 are spelt the same (named after the flagship of the English fleet to bully the Armada)

It was called Ark, as in Noah's Ark  in Elizabethan time the owner of a ship would be honoured in it's name,  this one was originally going to be the Ark Raleigh,  but as Elizabeth had a soft spot for Sir Wally, she put up the cash, and it became the Ark Royal (from Wikipedia,  so may or may not be true, but good story)

An interesting project! I noticed you have multiple Thermal and EM sensors and your battleships. As I understand it there's no value in having a smaller one with a bigger one; the the smaller one won't come into play unless the bigger one is knocked out. So if they're not there for redundancy purposes you could probably devote that space to more engineering bays or something.

boggo: Thanks for that, I've corrected it now.  I think my confusion was down to my source having spelling errors as I've noticed a couple of other ships have been spelled wrong as well.

Powergirl: Yes, they are for redundancies as are the extra ECCM modules and fire controls, if I wasn't pushing over my weight limits as it is I would also have some extra power plants fitted.
