Scrapping or Upgrading a fighter q4x

I need to replace a couple of very obsolete fighters that I have been using to shuttle around geology teams. The replacements are cheap enough to be no hassle to build, but short of just exploding them I cannot figure out what to do with the old ones. Am I missing something or is exploding them the only option for disposing of unneeded fighters?

You can use: Population window (Hotkey: F2) --> Industry Tab --> Stockpiles button in the top right --> Fighters in Orbit / Scrap Fighters button
