40,000 RP Designs
« on: July 17, 2021, 10:53:34 AM »
Introduction
I've been experimenting making theoretical designs with all tech less than or equal to 40,000RP researched except engine size, which is maxed out.

I try to get all ships to have an endurance lasting 6 months and 50 billion km, but try to get their Maint Life up to a year to account for repairs from battle damage. Ships with hangars are gonna have some more fuel for their air group.

All major ships (10,000 tons and up) are armed with at least 1 beam weapon regardless of role. This is because I don't want my 'stand off' ships to be completely defenseless in the event of an enemy closing into close range.

I know some designs would benefit from taking advantage of Single Weapon Fire Controls added in 1.13, but I forgot to update and did all this in 1.12 before realizing my mistake. Rest assured I'll take full advantage of them in 1.14.

Fleet Carrier
The first and most important design is my fleet carrier, which actually lives up to its name as its designed to carry its own fleet. Originally I was going to use it as a traditional carrier, but after seeing I could stuff 400 torpedo bombers I thought it might be more efficient to use FACs instead. Maybe even ships up to 3,000 tons as those are the size I make my corvettes already.

It has double the maintenance and range simply due to all the reserve fuel for the air wing.

AMM system might be a bit extra, but I had the space so why not? These ships represent a significant investment and I had the room, so might as well give them the best possible defense. And its cool.

Escort Frigate
Then we have the second most important ship in the fleet, the Escort Frigate. Designed with enough endurance to keep up with the fleet as well as provide effective point defense capabilities for its size. Don't get freaked out by the beam weapon, its a 'last resort' weapon if the Carrier Strike Force its escorting finds itself in beam range. On its own it might be unintimidating, but perhaps 4 or 5 of them will be enough to deter the enemy.

Missile Cruiser
Designed to fire very large size-12 missiles with multiple sub-ordinance to get the enemy to waste their AMMs and soften them up before sending in the bombers. Has a hangar to store some rescue shuttles and active sensor scouts as spotters. That might not be necessary considering the sensors it mounts, but size-12 missiles can go far outside your current sensor tech, so better to have than not.

Wondering if I can make a variant that can operate long range and independently; sacrificing missiles in exchange for range, PD, and perhaps a hangar bay to store its own escorts. Be a good unit to use on the frontier as a 'task force in a tube'.

That's some scary AFR.  I'm not sure they would make it out of the system before breaking down.

It will be fine. The Maint Life is the important factor. If a ship is 100,000 tons it will suffer 10x as many failures as an equivalent 10,000 ton ship. The AFR may be 10x higher but it will have 10x as many MSP to fix those failures.

Like Steve said, it can't be helped for larger ships. Stuff is always gonna break down when you have so many component, whats important is you have enough to repair it with.

I try to have double the Maint Life compared to deployment time to account for battle repairs, but sometimes I cheat.

While larger ships tend to have bigger and more expensive components which make them more expensive to repair they also can gain more efficiency out of highly skilled engineering officers and actually become more efficient than most smaller ships.

Two ships that are built with more or less the same components then larger ships actually are less costly than several smaller ships with the same total tonnage. Large ships generally can have more space for engineering in proportion to smaller ships in conjunction to utilize highly skilled engineers.
