Title: Military Jump Drives and Commercial Engines
Post by: Felius on January 21, 2022, 07:46:04 PM
Making a Stealth Explorer Ship for prolonged operations, so I'm using a commercial engine for fuel efficiency, but gave it a military jump drive for space efficiency (see below for ship design).

Except now it can't jump on its own. Says there isn't a jump drive capable of allowing commercial engines to jump. I've double-checked, and yes, the jump engines do have enough space capacity for the ship's size.

I thought that it used to be that military jump drives could have any and all ships of the appropriate size to jump, even if it had commercial angines. So, to ask: Did something change? Am I remembering things wrong?

The ship in question for reference, in case I'm just missing something obvious:

In C#, military jump drives can only jump military engined ships. Commercial drives can only jump commercial engined ships.

Guess I only found the outdated stuff about it instead. Guess I'll SpaceMaster my design into being viable with different engines (and probably more fuel capacity).

That is all fine, but right now, it is not possible to build a civilian jump tender for the war ships, as you are only allowed to carry one jump engine per ship. This means your tender cannot follow where your fleet is going. Maybe this can be changed? It required me to build two jump ship classes. One that got the war ships into battle and out and one that got the jump ships for the military vessels in and out. It feels kind of stupid though.

This has now been changed. In 2.0, MIL-JE can jump both types of engines while COM-JE can only jump commercial engines.

Notably since both classes of jump drive are civilian components, we can now build small (10k to 20k) civilian tenders to escort military fleets, allowing us to RP early game powers which don't develop a (squadron) jump assault capability but still need to transport their fleets through JPs. Very useful change.

Yup, plus it allows to make 3 tier travel system:

Tier 1: safe core worlds where civilians operate freely - systems connected by stabilized jump points
Tier 2: guarded outer worlds where only the government operates lot of big commercial ships - systems connected by (large) commercial jump tenders
Tier 3: unsecured frontier worlds where only military ships and small commercial exploration ships operate - systems connected by (small) military jump tenders

I normally use an engine power ratio of 55% for my survey ships so that the engines qualify as military while using minimal fuel. They aren't hyper efficient but they do the job.

In a past game (I don't remember what version it was, maybe 1.11?), I think I managed to get military and commercial jump capability in the same fleet by doing the following:
The jump tender was commercial engined, with a commercial jump drive and a tractor beam. It towed a space station (so I could build it on the ground without building yet another shipyard) which contained the military jump drive.

--- I did a thing whereby I put the Military Jump Drive in an engineless commercial station, then used a Commercial Hangar to transport it. The game only checked for engine type, so the engineless station worked fine while the carrier/tender carried a Commercial Jump Drive for itself and whatever else it was going to move. It was pretty space efficient too, overall.
