IF you have good information about the standard sizes of the enemy ships, you can build fighters with sensors of the resolution to detect the smallest of their standard ships. You also want your AWACs capable of outrunning the enemy. This usually requires it to be a high performance craft, a parasite craft with reduced crew endurance, range, and engineering endurance.
If you are behind on tech, it is possible that the AWACs you can build can only safely target the larger ships. But that still gives you the option of engaging those larger ships with FACs or 3000 ton stealth corvettes that can fit a fire control that can target at that extended range and simply engage in missions that kill those larger ships and withdraw.
Similar to the AWACs mission is the picket ship. Unlike the AWAC, the picket is about detecting enemy ships, not targeting them, and most importantly, detecting enemy targeting sensors. The picket ship requires significantly more endurance because its mission includes baiting an enemy into chasing a sensor contact that they can't overhaul, in order to buy time for a response fleet to arrive.
