Title: Load and Compare Existing Component Design Windows
Post by: 1tallboi on June 22, 2025, 05:43:18 AM
As it says on the tin

Add a "load existing design" button in the "create research project" window which then prompts a selection from a list of already existing components of that type (a checkbox can toggle the selection of existing prototypes). Selecting a component will then load all of the same features of the selected component, allowing easy direct upgrades to an old design, especially for more complicated components like active sensors and engines

EXAMPLE: I've researched SCAM Engines, better fuel efficiency and higher engine boost, enabling a new generation of better-performing engines. My current design of Cruiser-Grade Inertial Fusion Drives need to be upgraded. The new techs obviously allow me to choose between smaller engines, more efficient engines, or higher boosted engines. So, I go to the "design research project" window, select "Engines" from the dropdown, press "Load Existing Design" and select "Cruiser-Grade Inertial Fusion Drive" from the popup window, and a clone of that engine is "designed" in the research project window, allowing me to manually upgrade individual features of the component according to my desires/needs.

Additionally, create a checkbox labelled "compare to old design" which brings up a wide view of the research project window that shows the stats of the loaded component, allowing for easy comparison to older components. Thus, if I loaded my Cruiser-Grade Inertial Fusion Drives, I could press "compare to old design," so I can see in the window the performance differences between the new Cruiser-Grade SCAM Drive and the old Cruiser-Grade Inertial Fusion Drive.
