Terran Federation - Part Four
« on: January 18, 2012, 03:28:11 PM »
The Phony War (2028-2032)
Faced with multiple highly advanced warships the Federal Council announced a crash program of military expansion.  The rapid withdrawal of naval forces from Alpha Centauri, plus the initial deployment of the entire space-bound military capability beyond Sol, had highlighted the lack of fixed defences for Earth and the Martian Colony.  Therefore the Castle-Class Planetary Defence Centre was designed with 2 intended for Earth and a third for Mars.

This design is classed as a Planetary Defence Centre and can be pre-fabricated in 5 sections

In addition a further destroyer squadron was laid down, bringing the total to 4 - in the future the destroyer groups would be based around jump-capable formations of 6 ships with 4 DDG’s and 2 DDL’s.  However the Fleets review of the 1st Alpha Centauri campaign had determined that the Resolution- and Resolve-Class Destroyers were no longer fit for front line duty, and recommended the development and deployment of a series of heavier warships.  The first to be designed was the Nelson-Class Cruiser weighing in at some 5000tons larger than the preceding destroyer designs.  The Nelson-Class was intended to serve as the heart of any future offensive task groups, capable of firing 21 volleys of 6 size 5 missiles.  However there is no provision for any active defensive measures, unlike the smaller DDG’s, and so the Tribal-Class Area Defence Cruiser was born.  Smaller at only 10000tons the Tribal mounted no offensive weaponry, instead devoting its entire hull space to 20 size 1 missile launchers linked to 4 separate fire controls and magazine space for 615 anti-missile missiles.  Tribal-Class ADC’s and Nelson-Class CA’s must therefore always operate in groups to maximise their effectiveness.  Finally a third, faster warship was laid down – the Hood-Class Light Cruiser.  Weighing the same as the Tribal-Class ADC’s the Hood was unique for the Fleet in carrying no missiles.  Instead the ships armament was comprised entirely of 10cm lasers, capable of firing once every 10 seconds at targets up to 90000km away.  The Hood was designed with two main objectives in mind – firstly to provide a powerful point blank defence capable of targeting both incoming missiles and warships, especially in the setting of a jump point defence.  In addition the Hood was fastest class of vessel ever commissioned, exceeding the maximum speed of any other warship by 1200kps.  It was hoped that this secondary ability would allow the Hood to redeploy swiftly and even act as a commerce raider should the need arise.  Construction of the new warships began in early-2028 with the laying down of the first of 2 Nelson-Class Cruisers at NavYard Alpha.

In addition to the above expansion of the fleet it was decided the existing FAC groups would be expanded and given a more autonomous role.  Currently the Vanguard-Class lacked a primary search sensor as it was intended to operate with the existing destroyer groups.  Now a new class of FAC was designed to enable to the FAC groups to find its own targets, the Vanguard S-Class FAC.  Equipped with an MR50-R100 Active Search Sensor the Vanguard S gave independent FAC groups the same targeting capabilities as the current destroyer groups.  To further support extended FAC operations Fleet Command intended to lay down at least 1 Audacity-Class Escort Carrier, capable of carrying 6 FAC’s at a time.  Once a sufficiently sized jump-cruiser had been designed this would allow Audacity-class to operate in conjunction with the Nelson-Class Cruisers

Meanwhile the Federal Council raised the moratorium on further exploration – now that the entire fleet was back in Sol they felt that adequate protection could be ensured for both the science vessels and Sol.  Geological surveying of Barnards Star and Epsilon Eridani showed useful quantities of nearly all minerals, though neither system proved to have any further jump points.  Conversely FL Virginis proved to have almost no minerals in any useful quantities yet had 3  jump points - exploration of these jump points proved to lead to the systems of Ross 154, Gliese 563. 2 and GJ 1156, with both Ross 154 and GJ 1156 containing terraformable plane in the 1. 9 grade.  The four science ships currently in service are split into groups of two, with the First Survey Group scouting Ross 154 and the Second Survey Group scouting GJ 1156.

In February 2028 research is completed into Composite Armour.  All existing designs are updated and upgrades for the existing destroyers are planned, though currently all shipyards are fully occupied.  However the full utilisation of all of Earths industry is proving a serious drain upon the Terran Federations wealth.  Currently the economy is operating at deficit of over 500 credits per annum and government reserves have already dropped below the 30’000 credit mark for the first time.  Either expansion and production will have to be cut back or diverted to producing further financial centres and expanding the civilian economy.  All research is currently focused upon developing improved jump engine technology before designing a new jump cruiser to escort the Audacious- and Nelson-Classes.

In 2029 through to 2030 the Fleets main shipping elements, 8 Alpha-Class Freighters and 1 Beta-Class Jump Freighter, began shipping industry to Earth’s first extrasolar colonies.  The 2. 59 colony world in Barnards Star was chosen for the first expansion with the deployment of 41st Garrison Battalion and 2 Deep Space Tracking Stations before the arrival of mining and environmental infrastructure.  In Epsilon Eridani several planets contained highly accessible deposits of most of the Trans-Newtonian elements required for space flight, and over 2031 mass drivers and automated mining equipment were deployed.  Epsilon Eridani A-VI was selected to act as a planetary depot for mineral delivery via mass drivers, from where freighters could periodically collect.  3 DSTS were also deployed to provide sensor coverage of the inner system, guarded by the 40th Garrison Battalion.

29th September 2032
The first two Resolution Mod1-Class DDG are built by NavYard Beta.  This brings the total number of destroyers in service to 12, though the other 10 need refitting to the current standard incorporating Composite Armour.  The Mod1 upgrades used the space saved to add an extra layer of armour to each design.

First Survey Group completes the gravitational survey of Ross 154.  The system is found to contain only one jump point leading to Sol.  The 2 Enterprise-Class Science Vessels will now carry out a geological survey of the primary 8 planets and their moons.
