Good book. I've gotten the paperback edition back in 1981. His tactic of avoiding skip bombing, by going at full speed in a straight line, seems counter-intuitive but worked. Zig-zagging allowed bombardiers to better calculate their release point, since turning slowed the ship for a significant amount of time, while going straight and fast allowed for stable and heavy AA fire, disrupting the bombardiers' aim.
When it comes time to do entries for the Cazov in my Starfire campaign fiction I'll have a portion titled 'Cazov Destroyer Captain'. The player that ran the Cazov used destroyers very aggressively, and more often than not some survived. Eventually a flotilla was formed of elite-crewed DDs, and capital units in range of their gun launchers were asking for it.
