The
UNN Stephen Decatur was a S-Class Scout. For those nobs, the S-class is used to explore new systems, and to work as a tender for Bargle and Discovery class Scouts for the Scout service. The Decatur was the 4th of the class, and placed under the command of Roger Al-Shebi, the longest serving Lt. Commander in the fleet. He is a experienced officer that has served in rolls including the HQ survey office, C.O. of the
UNN Atlantis (Discovery Class) missile bases, and was the C.O. of the Wombat 007 missile fighter before being tapped as the commander of the Decatur.
Him and his crew where the first to explore the Alpha Centauri system, and then after completing that mission, was sent to explore the Jump Gate discovered by the
UNN Bargle Science ship. It used the Flur method to activate it and found itself in the Proxima Centarui system, with a matching gate on the other side. Quick survey showed that the Proxima system was rich in survey targets and could be the home of a number of Titan class marginal colony locations. Due to the fact that it had a working gate system, The UN fleet began preparations to begin settlement activities as the closure of mars and Luna to settlement has lead to high demand for new colonies.
The
UNN Stephen Decaturwas in orbit over Proxima III when it detected a unknown active sensor pinging. Roger Al-Shebi immediately ordered a return to the jumpgate and informed UN high command that it had made a encounter with a unknown spacecraft. the craft did not respond to hails. While the Decatur was able to outspeed the sensor craft, at 20 million km from the Jumpgate, the Dacatur was engaged by unknown craft. Due to the damage profile, Al-Shebi was able able to inform UN command that the they where being attacked by Meson guns. The 2nd volley of the Centauri attack craft caused the engine to fail. With the ship crippled Roger Al-Shebi ordered the scuttling of the ship, Roger Al-Shebi and 23 of his crew where able to get to lifepods.
This was the first loss of a ship of the UN Navy in it history. All leave was canceled and the bulk of the UN fleet sortied to the Jump gate. The UN was at War, and the UN Navy needed to secure Sol and take the war to the enemy. The war had begun.
