Deutsche Marine

The Deutsche Marine operates a balanced fleet, with good capabilities in both missile warfare and energy-range combat. The two Scharnhorst class missile cruisers, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, are the pride of the Deutsche Marine. Their primary armament of ten Krauss-Maffei M4 Missile Launchers combined with the Adler anti-ship missile allows them to strike from a distance of over fifty million kilometres, while their secondary armament of three Rheinmetall 100mm Railguns provides both limited missile defence and an assurance that the cruisers will not be helpless once their missiles are expended.

The Königsberg class is designed as a devastating energy-range combatant with strong armour and a secondary anti-missile function. With eight railguns, each firing four rounds, the sheer weight of fire compensates for the low accuracy of the weapons versus missiles. The nomenclature of the class is unusual in that its two units, Königsberg and Breslau, are named after cities lost to Germany following WW2 but which are now German once more. This naming convention is expected to continue in future units of the class.

The Bremen class escort provides long-range anti-missile defence for the fleet. Critics of the four Bremen class units, Bremen, Hamburg, Leipzig and München, complain that their relatively small size makes the class ineffective. In reality, their small size was driven more by the constraints of available shipyard space and the prioritization of the missile cruisers and destroyers rather than the desire of German shipwrights to produce a compact anti-missile design. Once the decision had been made the allocate the larger shipyards to the offensive-oriented classes, the Bremen had to perform its role within the limitation of a 6000 ton hull or be delayed until the shipyard could be expanded. In keeping with the recent nomenclature of the Deutsche Marine, the four escorts are all named after warships of the Kaiserliche Marine.

The Gazelle class geosurvey ship is designed for long-term operations at significant distances from Earth. A limited armament identical to the secondary armament of the Scharnhorst class missile cruisers was included in the design, with the intention that the Gazelles could serve as additional escorts when they are not on survey duty. However, their slower speed reduces both the effectiveness of their anti-missile fire and their suitability for fleet operations. Even so, their crews are at least comforted that they are not totally defenceless when operating billions of kilometres from home. Two units are in service; Gazelle and Niobe.

The Bremen Class escorts are quite nice and the combined railgun/missile power of this fleet should keep missile swarms at bay. Also the Spoilers . What i miss is extra long range recon capability. A sensor missile or buoy would be sufficient.

The Königsberg destroyers are a bit short on targeting computers. The missile-screening would be more efficient with 2 more of the small systems. Also one or two very small actives to cover the closest 200k Km as last line of defence.

I'm honored  ;D (Yes, I know it's named for the city).

It looks well balanced, but I suspect they wont be able to do much against heavy PD with just 20 anti-ship launchers. I wonder if they'll have a doctrine of combining AMM and ASM fire against well defended targets. Their PD also looks like it might have limited effectiveness against high performance missiles (though they do have a lot of it).

I was originally going to use German designations for different systems, such as Eisenbahngeschütz Feuerleitsystem for Railgun Fire Control System. However, my German is pretty bad so I would have to rely on Google translate for most things, which means I could come up with something completely ridiculous by accident :).

So help would be appreciated. If you could provide the German for railgun, missile launcher, active sensor, etc. I am more than happy to use them.

Well an "Eisenbahngeschütz" was a piece of superheavy armor namely the Dora from WW2. The ####s called a Railgun ("elektrische" or "elektromagnetische") "Schienenkanone" and considered Railgun-Flak briefly. Nowadays Railgun is the most accepted name. "Feuerleitsystem" you got right . Of interest might be ADLER which is the "Artillerie-, Daten-, Lage- und Einsatz-Rechnerverbund" the computerised and networked fire control system the Bundeswehr uses. Since 2006 we have ADLER 2.

So "Railgun Feuerleitsystem" and "Raketen Feuerleitsystem" i would say.

For Missile launcher i would say "Raketenwerfer", Boxlaunchers you could call "Startbehälter" and "Warheads" should be "Gefechtskopf". Rockets in military terms often are "Marschflugkörper" or "Lenkflugkörper" ("cruise missile") but if it has rocket-engine it is quite often a "Rakete".

Buoy are "Boje" and drones "Drohne".  

Power-plant can be either "Generator" or "Kraftwerk" while the later is more often used for Powerplant-buildings. Your Gas cooled fast reactors should be "gasgekühlte schnelle Brüter" or "Gasgekühlter schneller Brüter". "schnelle Brüter" denote here the FBR type reactors.  

Engine can be "Antrieb", "Motor" or "Triebwerk" so "Ion Engine" -> "Ionenantrieb" or "Ionentriebwerk", both work well.

Active sensors should be "aktive Sensoren". Geo-Sensors "geologische Sensoren" und Grav-sensors "Gravitationssensoren". Note that german words like "Messfühler" exist but often denote various Sensor designs. "EM-Sensor" for EM-sensors.


I hope i covered the essentials and if some fellow Germans with some military background read this ... dont hit me :P

I'm going to try and give some german translations, too.

- The railgun is pretty much untranslated. You could try 'Schienenkanone', with which I would be very, very unhappy because I most certainly wouldn't know what that is... Alternatively, how about calling it simply 'Bordkanone', most closely translated to 'ship cannon'? That seems to be the current german nomenclature. More exactly, the nomenclature seems to be '[Calibre]/[Length in calibre multiples]', so maybe a "Bordkanone 100/100', for a railgun of the length ten meter with a calibre of 10cm? The length in calibres can be gotten from the railgun launch velocity, multiplied by 100, for example. So, the Scharnhorst's railgun would be the 'Bordkanone 100/400', while the bigger Königsberg's would be the 'Bordkanone 200/400'. Or, to differentiate between weapons, the 'Bordkanone(k)', with (k) standing for 'Kinetisch', that is kinetic.
- 'Feuerleitsystem' or 'Feuerleitcomputer' standing for 'Fire control system' and (would you guess it?) 'Fire control computer' would both work.
- For a missile nomenclature, see later.
- For engines, both would work, though I'd say 'Ionenantrieb' works better as the principle, while 'Ionentriebwerk' works as the actual engine.
- Alternatively, for active sensors, you could simply take RADAR/Radar.

Now, for missiles... As far as I see it, there are two possible translations:
a) Unguided missile (aka rocket in english): Best translation's probably 'Rakete'.
b) Guided missile (aka uhm... missile in english): Best translation's probably 'Lenkflugkörper' (closer to cruise missile), abbreviated LFK.
So, you've got the following possibilities:
     ASM: 'Antischiffsrakete' would be more for an unguided missile, while 'Lenkflugkörper' or 'Raumzielflugkörper' (something like 'Space target cruise missile') for guided ones. I'd go with Lenkflugkörper, with an LFK in the missile's name, for example LFK-1 or something.
     AMM: 'Anti-Raketen-Rakete' is the closes translation (with ARR as abbreviation), but I'd go with 'Abwehrrakete' ('Defense rocket') for better readability.
     Drone: 'Drohne'. Plus, for Recon Drone, you can use 'Aufklärungsdrone'.
     Buoy: 'Boje'., or for sensor buoy 'Sensorboje'.
     Mine: 'Mine', or Raummine for 'Space mine'.

Speaking as an American, it certainly does that for me, but I don't find it a problem. It simply registers as a cool bit of flavor and I don't try to make sense of it. Insert joke here if you like.

Ah, I was wondering which approach you would take.
The Superbattleship (Bismark, Tirpitz), the fast Battleship + Support approach (Scharnhorst, Gneisenau), or the stealth tactic (U-Boot).
While the latter would have certainly been interesting, this is the approach I'd have seen as the most likely.
Though Germany was never big on Ships since 1919, so I wonder how they'll continue.
I certainly expect them to put more effort into research, and speeing up said research, and maybe in the future we see more troopships?

Not only the non-europeans, but the non-german-speaking europeans, too ;-).
That is, however, a problem with nearly all flavouring names, see some of the Ship Designs. My idea would be to add a word denominating that ship part's type, for example 'Bordkanone(k) 100/400 railgun'.
