This ship is built around the Federation’s new capital ship magnetic fusion drives. These drives are two and a half time larger than the old standard drives, giving them a much higher fuel efficiency. The new technology drives give the Mod 2 design a maximum speed nearly a third higher than its Mod B predecessor. In addition, the larger engines with better fuel efficiency technology built into them gives the class a fifty percent greater range.
The only other change for this class is the inclusion of shield technology. Space freed up by the utilization of newer, lighter armor materials was used for the shielding equipment. In addition, the engineering complement was reduced slightly.

The Mod 2B refit was focused mainly on the weapons. The older 15 cm near UV lasers were replaced by 20 cm UV lasers and a massive 25cm spinal mount. In addition, the number of AMM launchers was reduced to ten and the offensive missile launcher fire controls were replaced with the latest fire control capable of engaging gunboats at useful ranges. Finally, the original electronic warfare suite was replaced with the latest version developed by the Lunar laboratories.

This design is classed as a Planetary Defence Centre and can be pre-fabricated in 12 sections
The Federation is hesitant to build PDC’s on the surface of its populated planets. The Council’s stated reason is that they hesitate to make planetary populations a target, however, their real reason is that they view the Fleet as their ultimate arm of control over the planetary populations. The cities might fall to rioters, but the rioters will never have an answer for the fleet hanging over their heads, and heavily armed marines dropped from orbiting transports.
With the capital now firmly established on Luna, and the planetary population there firmly pro-Federation, the Council has decided that several PDC’s will be built on Luna to provide for local defense.

With the deployment of fuel refineries to distant systems, and the Federation Fleet expected to undertake long distance missions at a moment’s notice the Fleet decided that a Fleet Support Vessel was needed. The Rear Area class can carry a large amount of maintenance supplies, missiles, and fuel to support the fleet on its deployments.
