This class, and is fellow non-jump version, are considered by the Admiralty and the Council to be the ultimate expression of the Federation’s power. This massive leviathan is intended to overawe anyone or any group that would pit themselves against the Federation. The class carries the latest Federation capital ASM as intended to be able to stand up to anything encountered by the Navy to date.

This class is based on the Nimitz-J version. The extra space realized by the removal of the jump engines is devoted to improved armor and shielding, along with a significantly increased broadside of laser weaponry.

This improved Belknap design was based on the 2B version. The replacement of the older inertial fusion engines with the latest magnetic fusion design has boosted the ship’s speed to 4545 kps, an increase of 25%. In addition, the design board has approved the transition to larger, more fuel efficient engines. The older Belknap class units mounted five engines, while this design mounts two, nearly doubling its range for a minor increase in fuel tankage. Other changes were limited to improving the armor coverage by utilizing the latest armor available.
While the Navy does not always approve the refitting of ships with new engines, due to the (usually) prohibitive cost, in this case the Admiralty made an exception. All units of the Belknap class will eventually be upgraded to the Mod 3 standard.
Due to the length of time it took to put this class into production, it was obsolescent in many ways before the first unit was modded to this standard. While slower, the Mod 2C and Mod 2D designs had significant improvements in weaponry and ECM, thus, this class was superseded in short order by the Mod 3B, which included those improvements.
