Aurora Chat / Secondary Guns
« on: January 11, 2018, 04:04:07 PM »
How useful are secondary guns on ships?

By secondary guns I mean beam weapons that are not the main (largest) guns but are also not meant for PD.

What I want is to have main spinal-mounted railguns to take on large ships and then have smaller turreted railguns to take on smaller ones.

Would this space be better used for other things?

Aurora Chat / Corporation and Dockyard Names
« on: January 05, 2018, 05:34:42 PM »
What are some corporation/dockyard names you have come up with for your empire?

I've used names from Shadow-run like Saeder-Krupp (weapons) Renraku (computer systems) and Wuxing (jump-drives)

I've also used conglomerates of existing companies, like Lockheed-Boeing, Toyota-Mitsubishi, and Raytheon-Microsoft

Military shipyards are all federally owned and so they are called just "Earth Federal Shipyard 1"

Commercial shipyards are named after companies like "Ares Macrotechnology Void-works" or "Lavokchkin Orbital Slipyards".

Aurora Chat / Solar Only Games
« on: October 16, 2017, 07:54:52 PM »
How interesting can games that take place only in the solar system be? I'm concerned about lack or resources for extended playthroughs and lack of enemies. I suppose for the latter you could piss of the population of Mars enough to get them to rebel but then I'm afraid they won't be formidable enough to warrant a challenge.

Aurora Chat / More Resources on Planets
« on: September 10, 2017, 10:37:15 PM »
Does anyone else feel that there are too few resources on planets by default? Is there a way to not only edit individual planets to have more resources but also make it so that generated planets will have a larger amount?

Aurora Chat / Auto-Terraforming
« on: July 08, 2017, 01:57:31 PM »
Couldn't there be a button or something that sets terraforming to automatically set the parameters to make the planet habitable for your people?

Aurora Chat / Custom Ground Unit Names
« on: May 07, 2017, 12:52:58 AM »
One of my favorite things about Aurora is in how it allows you to customize everything like rank names and ship designations. In that spirit, I wish you could customize the default names for your ground units. So instead of "1st heavy assault battalion" you can make it read "1st heavy assault regiment" without having to go through and change the name manually for each one.

Is there a way to do this right now?

Aurora Chat / Itsy Bitsy Stike Craft
« on: April 04, 2017, 11:49:14 PM »
I'm trying to make a strike craft that is no larger than 250 tons, has stealth capabilities and can hold at least one missile in a box launcher.

Similarly I am trying to make a missile that is highly damaging and super fast.

The trick is to make a strike craft and missile that can close in without being detected and launch a missile that hits within 5 seconds.

If this is indeed possible at what tech level does it become feasible? How big should the missile be? Should I opt for more box launchers or bigger missiles?

Aurora Chat / Bigger = Better?
« on: April 02, 2017, 02:16:17 AM »
I while ago I started a thread discussing ships sizes and there was some interesting debate about whether larger ships are more efficient. Some say that larger ships are more efficient in terms of defense, build times, and crew requirements while others said that its smaller ships are better because they build faster, require smaller maintenance facilities and smaller jump tenders.

Now my play style is a rather slow one and I never expand into a system for anything other than exploration without a gate, so jump-engine size isn't really an issue for me. I also start the game with 7 billion population on Earth. With that in mind I decided on the sizes below.

My thinking is that the next class up should be at least three times bigger than the one below it.
3,000 ton corvette
10,000 ton frigates (rounding up)
30,000 ton destroyers
100,000 ton cruisers (decided to round up)
300,000 ton dreadnoughts
1,000,000 ton super dreadnoughts (again, rounding up)

Its large, I know, but I usually give my ships a lot of extra utilities like tractor beams, emergency cryo, and Gauss and missile point defense. I also have a rule of having an ECCM for every fire control and 1 fire control for every six weapons. I'm even thinking about giving cruisers and up hangars large enough for a small (relative to its size) wing of missile bombers once I figure out carrier mechanics a bit better. In addition, all ships destroyer and up get a marine contingent of some sort with a combat drop module that gets bigger as the class goes up.

I know that in Aurora specialization is better than generalization but this just feels right to me.

I might also have sub classes in between, like a battlecruisers at 150,000 tons or something. These large jumps give me some flexibility.

Aurora Chat / Are Carriers Better?
« on: March 19, 2017, 08:32:05 PM »
How do large (100,000 ton) carriers stack up against rail/missile ships of similar size in combat? Are they more effective generally? I know that in Aurora specialization trumps generalization as far as ship roles go so I guess a ship which does both is out.

I have set my explorers to first survey jump points and then survey planets but whenever the finish doing the first I keep getting messages stopping time saying that they are both unable to carry out their survey mission and that they are going to do their secondary mission of surveying planets.

Why would the game interrupt me when a ship is doing exactly what I asked it to do? Is there a way I can get it to stop without never getting notified that the ship has completed its JP survey AND planet survey?

Aurora Chat / Multiple Colonies per System
« on: January 05, 2017, 04:14:57 AM »
It seems to me that there is little benefit to developing multiple colonies per system farther than developing infrastructure, terraforming and maybe placing down PDCs. Moving minerals around systems to planets that aren't receiving mass driver deliveries is a pain and unless you are in a  losing war there does not seem to be any reason to spread around your capabilities.

Aurora Suggestions / More Deeply Customizable Beam Weapons
« on: November 08, 2016, 03:31:34 PM »

Instead of relying on technology to increase the size of beam weapons they should be more like radars where the bigger you make the caliber, heatsink, and barrel the heavier the weapon becomes with tech making each component more and more effective.

Or at least give us a way to give them the x2, x4, x.5 modifier, I want my UNSC ships.

Aurora Chat / Survey Mother-ship and Drones
« on: November 06, 2016, 01:42:01 AM »
I want to make exploration ships which do no explore planets themselves but rather release a number of geo/grav survey drones whenever they enter a system.

How difficult is this to set up in terms of design and in management?

Aurora Chat / Useless Money?
« on: October 31, 2016, 04:10:30 PM »
I don't really understand what money is for besides paying civilians to give you minerals. Does it actually matter if you balance your budget?

Aurora Chat / No Sorium on the Gas Giants
« on: August 19, 2016, 11:50:34 PM »
So in my game there wasn't any sorium on Neptune or Jupiter. I understand that minerals are randomized but I can't help but feel that gas giants should by default have some hefty amount of the stuff on them, especially in the starting system. Is there a way I can add it with the Space Master in unharvested form? All it allows me to do is add it to the planets inventory as a harvested item.
