Changing planetary terrain
« on: May 05, 2020, 04:30:51 PM »
How is everone's experience with changing the terrain of a body through terraforming?
I have managed to change 'Barren' to 'Tundra' and 'Cold Desert', and the 'Cold Desert' into 'Desert', but all of these are only through temperature changes only. I have terraformed Luna's hydro extent to 31.09, but it remains a 'Desert' even though, according to this post: http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php?topic=8495.msg104912#msg104912, a 'Desert' is supposed to have maximum hydro extent of 30. One of the conditions of changing terrain is that the current terrain no longer possible, so it should have changed by now.

Has anyone had success with changing a body's terrain through terraforming, besides changing the temperature? I want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious before possibly reporting a bug.

I have Luna with Prairie terrain at 33.11% Hydrographic Extent and 35.90 °C temperature and Mars as Sub-Tropical with 44.84% Hydrographic Extent and 21.471 °C temperature. And one colony with Temperate Forest with 44.88% Hydrographic Extent and 13.651 °C temperature. So water percentage definitely changes planetary terrain.

Some terrains are also dependant on tectonics, thats why Io has mountains as dominant terrain. It will change to Forested Mountains with 20% Hydrographic Extent and oxygen at 0.1 Atm.

That's good to know. Thanks. I'll just keep adding water to see when something happens.

EDIT: Typical. I just had to go on for a few more weeks, and it changed to 'Sub-Tropical' :P
