I just realized this in my current game, and sent a freighter group into a system where two NPR's had been duking it out.  Much more convenient than having to send the salvager back and forth to unload after every third wreck.  Nice feature!

Wrecks you need a salvager (a ship with a salvager on it, and cargo space).

That cargo space can be on the salvager itself, or you can ensure you have freighters in the same task group, in which case you don't need cargo space on the actual salvage ship.

Lifepods, all you need to do is click the check box marked Lifepods on the F12 screen and issue orders to a ship to pick up survivors.

Is there a way to pick up lifepods, alien or ours, as well as get some use out of the wrecked ships. . .  So far in my first game its them 3 to 1.  If you count chasing one off from the WP the 3 to 2. . .
