Yes. Point blank means it'll fire just before a missile hits. "Mode" is the maximum range at which it will attempt to do so.

So if you deploy some ships a little forward of your main fleet, you can choose whether your main fleet will try to defend these as well or not (e.g. if you want to reserve some PD shots for your command/jump ship).

So "Point Blank PD Mode 10" means "fire at missiles just before they try to hit any friendly ships in 100k km radius"?
If that missiles was coming from the opposite side than the friendly target was located from the defender there could be better time to shoot than just before hit on the targeted ship as the missile was closer to the defender few moments before that.

So it doesn't have to be in "Area defence" mode to defend other TGs?

Area Defence means that it will shoot all hostile missiles as soon as they are in the radius.   Point Blank means that it will only fire right before the missiles hit to get the highest chance of hitting.

TG doesnt matter, only location and alliance status.

Area defence doesn't interact with or defend other ships at all; it shoots at missiles if they are within the specified range at the end of the round. It won't shoot at missiles that hit ships.

(A note with area defense; it occurs before normal beam firing, preempting attacks on enemy vessels in preference to attacking missiles.)

Another note is that you cant actually do area PD and switch to final fire PD at the last interval. I believe this is because weapon recharging happens after missile interception, so if a weapon is discharged via area PD, it won't have power for final fire until the round after next.

it does determine the range at which it will defend another ship - i am pretty sure i used this a couple months ago for spreadout PD.  It only makes a difference if you are spreading out and/or using escorts.

It is confusing you can make both "Point Blank PD Mode 15" and "Point Blank PD Mode 1" but OK, so it does not do anything. The ship in Point Blank mode behaves the same for any set distance and fires only in the last moment. Thanks.

No, point blank will always fire for only the current task group. You change the range when setting your PD for area defense.

I think that it sets the max range at which it will defend another ship.  (not 100% on this though)

Does setting of "Max PD range"  for "Final Defensive Fire" beam point defense mode actually do anything or are all those various mode-numbers all effectively just mode-1, "Point Blank PD Mode 1"?
