Having multiple BFCs of the same kind does nothing for anti-missile defense but is very advantageous when you're facing many small targets, which will become very relevant with the NPR fighters coming in the next patch. You could use several MFCs for the same reason, to reduce overkill without introducing delays between salvoes.

I already spread my fire controls out anyway as I always spread my beam weapons among pretty much all combat ships. If you ever happen to be forced into a beam shootout it is quite advantageous to have beam weapons on all ships not just some of them which can be just concentrated and picked off leaving the rest defenceless. For the same reason I rarely completely make ships only with one single function unless they are really small.

"This assignment is done at the level of individual shots (not weapons) against individual missiles (not salvos)."

Somehow I missed this part, reading this post for the tenth time :)

Thanks

How does PD work against missiles?

Can one BFC attack only one salvo or are all missiles treated as one group?

Therefore, is there any advantage to having more than one or two BFCs?

And, would it pay to have more than one MFC to split the missiles into separate salvos?
