I usually go for a mix. A dedicated AMM destroyer class (5000-7500 tons), a dedicated beam PD destroyer class, and the offensive ships usually have a CIWS or 4. Especially the cruisers and such.

What do you folks normally like for antimissile defenses? I usually dedicate PD lasers/gauss cannons and AMM launchers to my lighter escort frigates (7500 tons), have my destroyers (12500 tons or so) equipped with 12cm dual-purpose turrets and maybe a couple of AMM launchers, and have a CIWS on cruisers and up with no other point defenses. Since my fleets are somewhat large (5-7 ships or more) I find outsourcing PD capability and sensors to the escorts works well, especially given that the faster escorts can break and engage when the enemy fleet runs out of missiles as the cruisers and destroyers can press their own missile attack. Does anyone put the PD on their larger ships or forgo PD lasers? Since I haven't seen much combat in my current game, I'm wondering if my current strategy will work.
