Doesn't morale affect the numbers?

I hope you don't mind, but I moved this to Spoilers since I don't recall anyone ever having posted anything about Precursors invading colonies.

Thanks,
John

I regularly station combat troops at my Archaeological digs to protect against discovered subterranean vaults and on one occasion an undiscovered Precursor ship dropped an assault battalion on the colony...

anyway I am finding when it comes to combat that I am not getting full value out of my troops
for instance
I had 2 Mobile Inf battalions with a defence of 43 combined, an Engineer Brigade with a defence of 11 and a Garrsion Battalion with a defence of 22 - yet when assaulted my combat factor was 36 or 39 (can't remember which) regardless of which neither total relates to anything
I have had similar problems before but didn't really pay attention because I had such a huge margin
Anyone have any ideas?
