Quite honestly, theres a bunch of names in various sets that were actual about 50 years ago.^^

I agree with this.  The closest one can get to a "global" naming scheme right now is the U. S.  naming scheme.   :P Even adding percentage chances for other naming schemes doesn't really produce the desired effect, as you can only select 4 (I would like a larger distribution based on relative population sizes on earth).

If you open the race info screen (Ctrl-F2 if I recall), you can set percentages of naming schemes.

It'd be nice to have the option to have the officer naming system pick a random earthly name scheme for each officer/scientist/ect.  It would allow for more diverse names in our UN space fleets.
