IMO, wealth is something of a broken mechanic right now. :(

In addition to other problems (like standard trans-newtonian starts not being able to pay for all of their stuff), civilian shipping income is heavily dependent on time intervals. I killed one of my games through heat-death much too early by relying on shipping income.

Game mechanic:
My homeworld is Earth.  My largest colony is Luna.  My civilians ship colonists from one to the other, which earns me more taxes then all other sources of income, combined.

Suggestion:
Pay taxes per kilometer of distance.
