You will get a message when your geosurvey ships have found ruins, too.
When you take a look at the display-2 tab(I thinks it's there) in the system map, there is a list where all known ruins are displayed(as long as they haven't been visited by an xenoarchologist team).

Once you have detected the ruins the information will show on the system view front tab (F9).  The general size of the ruins is shown in the same box as what colony is present on the planet.

An orbital geosurvey should find ruins if any exist.

I read about ruins on the wiki and after searching the forums I have been unable to find the information I am looking for.

I know I can find ruins by doing surveys but what kind of survey needs to be done?

Also, since I did not know about the ruins when I first started how can I tell if a planet I already surveyed has ruins or not? Will the information be there if I click on the planet?
