I was attacked on the ground by one of these spoilers, too.  The planet in question had alien ruins on it, but I had not yet landed a construction battalion, only an initial garrison.  My landing ships didn't have active sensors, but passive sensors saw momentary signals of a ship (or ships, can't remember).  There were also two missiles, bouys I suppose, sitting in orbit of the planet.  Those sat there until I shot them down much later.

I have been invaded in the same fashion as TheDeadlyShoe, just not on earth and slightly different conditions.

I took over a precursor base on a moon and next thing I know a troop ship showed up with what I think was the equivalent of 10 divisions and landed on what I just took. Annilated my ground forces and so I turned my guns on them since there was no air to stop me and blasted away with Gauss cannons and rail guns.

It took nearly a month to kill them all.

Also, precursor troop ships dont appear to actually be ships. When they landed the ship dissapeared, its like the ship itself turns into the troops.

It was a Precursor troopship, but it dropped a battalion on Earth for some reason. O_o

Did you eyeball them funny? :)

Ruins can spawn robotic guardians which will attack.

On one occasion i've been attacked on the ground, but I think it was a messed up Spoiler.

if you want defensive Ground combat you'll have to run the enemy faction yourself.. xD

Hi,

2 years ago I asked Steve if Alien landed on planets with ground forces. He told me no, they don't, they always glasses in fact.

Now, I don't see anything in the changelog regarding that, so I guess that's already true? You'll never get invaded by alien ground forces, unless someone had a different experience?
