As I understand you will work at significantly reduced efficiency if the outpost has less then 10mil population

Boarding should give you a full layout assuming you actually capture the ship.

But salvaging blown up ships also can give you some knowledge of surviving components.

I dropped an espionage team on a small alien outpost some 6 months ago and then picked the alien in the dropdown box of the team. Can I expect something within a year? Or do I have less chance if the population is not big (probably?)

Also, how do I get more infos on the ships I fight, I mean the internal systems they use? By boarding?
