I would guess some sort of 'inexperienced fleet penalties' or low morale or other effect prevented them from following orders immediately.

No such thing; they've been trained to 100% and have full morale.

I have not even once had to press 'open fire' to get PD to work.  Training delay penalties do not apply to defensive fire.

Which combat log were you looking at, empire or SM?  SM does not have all the messages shown by default - it's possible (though unlikely) your ships were just missing like crazy.

I also checked SM but nothing showed... Doesn't matter now that the issue is resolved

No, in PD mode they should work automatically.

Should.

So after a fair bit of fiddling and savescumming, the PD guns started firing and engaging incoming targets :D

I assume this is due to the fact that I forgot to tell the PD FCs to open fire, though I'm not entirely sure about that

Alright, here are some screencaps of the whole situation.

Have you pressed 'open fire' after setting your PD? Yes that is needed and no the game does not tell you this.

Yes I have.
What do the combat logs say? Anything about targeting problems?
None
If the missiles are launched and cross the entire distance between launcher and target in under 5 seconds, not even Final Defensive Fire has enough time to react - only CIWS do as they are handled separate. So make sure that you are far enough. This is a common problem with multi-faction starts but can also happen if you're getting close to certain spoilers.

Nope, these were detected really far out; enough time to get some AMM salvoes in

Questions; Do you have an active sensor contact on the missiles? How fast are the enemies missiles? Did you try this with the Final Fire PD mode or the Area Defense mode? Can you post a screenshot(s) of the combat log showing the missiles hitting you?

@Garfunkel He is using Point blank so it should have the same mechanic of shooting as CIWS.

Are your final defensive fire ships separate from the ships which are being targeted?
If they are then final defensive fire won't help as the ships will only fire if their taskgroup is the target

They fire just fine as long as they are in the same location.

How do you have the fire controls setup?  Thats usually where I make mistakes.
He posted that too. :P

Well, the tech is definitely solid, so no error there. The only thing I can see is that the PD fire is rigged to trigger at up to 50k (which is the fire control's maximum), while the actual weapons only fire up to 30k. That might or might not cause an issue, though I have never had it myself despite relying on automated settings there too all the time.

---
Just looked into two older games of mine, and some of the controls there also used farther ranges than the weapons could do, yet always worked fine. I have not had any confirmation in 7.x about this though, so it might be different now.
I also vaguely remember people here having that kind of problem sometimes, but I don't recall how it was resolved.

Maybe you can upload your Stevefire.mdb somewhere (e.g. Google Drive or Zippyshare etc.), so we can take a closer look and test? That is if the change in PD range above didn't already resolve it of course.(but unlikely)
