I've been reading Weber's Armageddon Empire series, and something along the lines of Dahak (though not so big).

Improved fire control is a good one. Maybe a small percentage increase in tracking speed.

I have started adding code for species that use a different primary gas instead of oxygen but I haven't finished it yet. That should add a lot of variety when it is finished. In terms of machine races, cyborgs, etc, I think that will have to be part of general racial traits. I also wouldn't mind some type of biological ships if I can figure out a way to add them that makes them sufficiently different without any game-breaking changes
