As for AMM def for fighters you could use a single laser turret with a reduced size laser later on. which gives some protection to your fighters. They weight Less then 150 tons at reasonable gear-sizes. The firecontrols for fighters are already pretty fast so you wouldnt get speed penalties for targeting. Just get a small squad of these fighters in front of your maintroops.

Namely, my race of nebula-dwellers (aka "The Nullan") just encountered the Star Swarm (and it's actually the first time I've fought them, too.)

Tactics are completely different in nebulas from what's been discussed above. No missiles at all. On the other hand, the Nullan have been focusing ship design on heavy armor to get through the dust. Though it's useless against mesons, it does mean the entirety of my battle fleet is faster than the swarm within the nebula.

Then there's my gunboats, which mount 6 twin meson turrets, each on independant fire control- perfect for engaging multiple targets. They're backed up by particle beam destroyers. The battle is a slug-fest. Unfortunately, I'm hindered by inexperienced crews, but once I was able to close and actually hit, I started doing significant damage. Not sure if I'll win this one yet, but I am learning a lot of valuable combat and ship design lessons. (Though micromanaging the fire control and targeting is a bit of a pain in the butt.)

One time I jumped into a system and started surveying the grav points when wrecks started appearing, wrecks which I could properly identify as belonging to the precursors which I had encountered in other systems.

Somebody in that system was just kicking the crap out of the precursors who were giving me the run around for decades.  So I got the hell out of there, when I returned all the wrecks were gone, and there were x99 800 ton ships coming full bore down upon my war fleet.

It was a slaughterfest.  I lost all my ships.

Now I'm specifically building some new ships designed to fight the swarm.

These guys are tough.

You should make an AAR of this idea. I mean, while we wait for 5.7.
