Do NPRs salvage ships?

I've seen the "A wreck has disappeared from sensors" message a few time. I never saw any aliens buzz by in the area, so it's a bit strange.

Action stations on this ship means to be the first in line when the espresso machine finally gets fixed and Condition One is when we're out of toilet paper and have to return to Altair. What is a drill?

Damnit. I sent a bunch of ships but I expected to find a different kind of industry...
