High energy particles coming from the sun being trapped in the radiation belts and exciting all sort of atoms to release light.

Actually had a colleague back in college answer a question about cerenkov radiation with pixie dust. Needless to say he didn't pass the exam- but then neither did 70% of the other guys in class.
